Brittney Mikell Left The Pharmaceutical Field With Aspirations To Become The First Black Woman To Own A Brewery In Minnesota

Former pharmacist Brittney Mikell will be making history in her next chapter. WCCO-TV reports Mikell exited her role in pharmacy after experiencing burnout. She then decided to purse her passion in brewing and landed a role as an assistant brewer at La Dona Cerveceria in Minneapolis, MN. “I didn’t feel like I was making the impact that I really wanted to in healthcare,” Mikell explained to  Eater Twin Cities. “I woke up one day and realized that this could be a really cool place where I could make an impact. You only really live once, so I decided, let’s just pivot — why not?” Mikell maintained bigger aspirations while working at La Dona Cerveceria, referring to herself as “a huge dreamer,” per WCCO-TV. She plans to become the first Black woman to own a brewery in Minnesota. This is significant as just 1% of breweries in the U.S. are Black-owned, Essence reports. LeBron James Has A Goal To Own An NBA Franchise 'Sooner Than Later' — Here Are More Black Stars With Similar Aspirations

We have witnessed high-profile celebrities toss their names in the basket to become sports owners. However, landing the title requires billions of dollars. Even some of the wealthiest Black celebrities would not qualify at the moment, despite their net worths. Forbes reports that 50 of the most valuable teams are worth $3.4 billion, up 9.9 percent between 2020 to 2021 and a 55 percent increase from the previous six years. Michael Jordan purchased the Charlotte Hornets for $275 million in 2010, ESPN reports, and the team is valued at $1.58 billion today. Since purchasing a team is often around the billion dollar mark, we have seen several high-profile names explore minority ownership, more so within the last two decades. Plus, this route affords various benefits. Usher (Cleveland Cavaliers in 2005 for $9 million), Jay-Z( Brooklyn Nets in 2004 for $1 million), and Shaquille O’Neal (secured five percent stake in Sacramento Kings in 2013) are just some heavy hitters who secured minority...

Why Fawn Weaver Had To Disguise Her Title Of Founder And CEO Of Uncle Nearest During Its Early Years

There were great sacrifices that Fawn and Keith Weaver made to ensure that the Uncle Nearest whiskey brand would not fail. Today, Uncle Nearest is recognized as a force within the spirits industry, reflecting the resilience of Fawn, whose story is one of overcoming adversity with triumph. She dropped out of school in 10th grade, bounced between homeless shelters, and attempted to take her life twice. She viewed her struggles as affirmation of a higher calling — one that has materialized into an award-winning whiskey brand that has topped a billion-dollar valuation and is the fastest-growing American whiskey in history, as AFROTECH™ previously reported. The inception of Uncle Nearest resulted from relentless research Fawn conducted in Lynchburg, TN, to uncover the story of Nathan “Nearest” Green. Enslaved at the time, Green was responsible for teaching Jasper Newton “Jack” Daniel how to make whiskey using the technique known as “sugar maple charcoal filtering.” Some call this the...

Google Becomes The Latest Company To End Its DEI Commitments

In a decision reflecting a broader trend in the corporate world, Google has eliminated its diversity-based hiring targets and quietly erased language relating to Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion (DEI) from its annual report. This decision isn’t just a corporate policy update. This move aligns with a growing trend of companies scaling back public commitments to DEI in response to evolving legal and political pressures. The ripple effect of this change reaches far beyond Silicon Valley, raising urgent questions about the future of workplace diversity, corporate responsibility, and the very fabric of inclusive leadership in America. Google Shifts Away From DEI Metrics According to Reuters, Google’s move came after the company abandoned its diversity hiring goals, which were initially designed to foster a more inclusive workforce. The company cited the impact of recent court decisions and executive orders from the Trump administration as pivotal factors influencing this change. These...

According to his LinkedIn, the goal is to create franchising opportunities for Black and brown communities. “If there’s a mission for me and how I’m moving now, what I want to have an impact on is really educating people on the power of group economics. People when they have success, most of the time they do it as a collective family, as a community. Owning businesses in their own communities,” he said. “When you look at [Black communities] we don’t own the majority of the businesses in it. We don’t own homes most of the time. It just continues to push us into pockets of poverty that are harder and harder to climb out of as an individual,” he told WHYY News.
