FN Meka is making headlines as the first artificial intelligence (AI) rapper to sign with Capitol Records, Music Business Worldwide reports.

Under the major label, the AI rapper has a newly released single titled “Florida Water,” featuring Gunna and gaming streamer Clix.

According to Ryan Ruden, Capitol Music Group’s Executive Vice President of Experiential Marketing & Business Development, the musical project “meets at the intersection of music, technology, and gaming culture” and “is just a preview of what’s to come.”

He added: “This latest project with FN Meka and Clix, while a first of its kind, is only an evolution of Capitol Records’ 80-year history of innovation.”

The single “Florida Water” will be available on streaming platforms and Capitol Records has scored “a unique partnership” with music startup Slip.stream, which means other creators will have a chance to use the song on YouTube and Twitch “without monetization or takedowns.”

The Creators Behind FN Meka

Although it is clear that Rapper FN Meka is not a real person, his voice is and it was co-created by Anthony Martini, founder of Factory New, and his partner Brandon Le. Over time, Martina hopes that — with further advancements — a human voice will no longer be required and that computers will be able to take precedence.

“We’ve developed a proprietary AI technology that analyzes certain popular songs of a specified genre and generates recommendations for the various elements of song construction: lyrical content, chords, melody, tempo, sounds, etc. We then combine these elements to create the song,” Martini said, according to Music Business Worldwide.

Martini added: “As of now, a human voice performs the vocals, but we are working towards the ability to have a computer come up with and perform its own words – and even collaborate with other computers as ‘co-writers.'”

While FN Meka Has Millions Of Followers On TikTok, Not Everyone Is A Fan

What’s more, it appears FN Meka is fairing pretty well despite being a newbie on the block. In addition to releasing a single with Gunna, one of the most relevant rappers today, the robot rapper has also gained over 10 million followers and has generated over a billion views on TikTok. The growing popularity is leading to more brand partnerships and artist collaborations.

Yet, not everyone appears to be a fan.

Some Twitter users have pointed out that the voice behind the robot is a white male. Meanwhile, others just don’t see the point of giving a music deal to a robot.
