Daley, who served the city at the time. The photos also include a visit where Dr. King spoke to a crowd at Soldier Field and his time attending a fundraiser in support of the Civil Rights Movement during the 60s that was held at the iconic Chicago international Amphitheatre. Viral First Grader Who Wore A Mask In His School Photos Receives Over $30K Toward College Fund

When first grader Mason Peoples went to take his school picture, a Dorian Studio photographer presented the six-year-old with a difficult question which turned into a hilarious exchange that went viral on his mother Nicole Tucker’s Facebook last week. Sporting his mask, the photographer requested for Mason to take off his mask for his shining moment. Following his mother’s orders Mason responds, ”My mom said to keep it on all the time unless I’m eating and far from everybody.” The photographer reportedly suggested to Mason the removal of the mask would only be temporary to take the picture. The first grader insists, “No, Thank you, I always listen to my mom!” The photographer responds, “Ok, say cheese!” The standard protocol for Dorian Studio is to verify with schools if masks are optional for students prior to conducting the portraits. Upon approval from the school, the photographer presents the option to students, Good Morning America reports. “If students don’t want to [remove...

New Legislation In Norway Requires Influencers To Disclose When They Edit Photos For Social Media

A new law passed in Norway puts forth a very interesting social media rule. The law — which was passed earlier this month in the Norwegian Parliament— requires social media influencers to disclose whether they’ve manipulated the image in any way before posting. The Hill reports that this law was passed in an effort to combat body image issues faced by young people in the country today. If the photo has “a body’s shape, size or skin has been changed by retouching or other manipulation,” it must be marked as edited, according to Norway’s new legislation. What’s more, the new Norway law stipulates that celebrities and influencers must disclose if they were paid for the post, regardless of whether the photo in question was edited. “The measure will hopefully make a useful and significant contribution to curbing the negative impact that such advertising has, especially on children and young people,” said the Norwegian Ministry of Children and Family, in a statement provided to Vice. The...

Apple To Pay Woman Millions After iPhone Repair Workers Posted Her Explicit Photos Online

According to Indy100 , Apple will reportedly pay millions of dollars in compensation to a 21-year-old student, after explicit photos from her phone were posted to social media by iPhone repair technicians. The incident occurred in 2016. The settlement explains that the student took her device to a repair store in California which was operated by an Apple contractor by the name of Pegatron. The lawsuit discloses that the unnamed student’s phone was sent to the tech company because it wasn’t working. Allegedly,  a pair of technicians working on the student’s device posted “10 photos of her in various stages of undress and a sex video” to the social media platform, Facebook in order to make it seem as though she uploaded them herself. In order to keep the case private, Apple was not named within the lawsuit and was instead referred to as “customer.” Since the situation was brought before the court, the employees were subsequently fired. Legal filings from the case revealed that the...

This App Used Millions of People's Photos To Train Its Facial Recognition Tech Without Their Consent

Photographs are a great way for people to document their lives. As photos have become digital, so have photo albums with apps like Ever . “Ever is a company dedicated to helping you capture and rediscover your life’s memories,” the app’s website says. However, it seems Ever has done more than simply help people “make memories.” A new report by NBC News has revealed that Ever uses the photos people share to train the company’s facial recognition system. Then, Ever offers to sell that technology to private companies, law enforcement, and the military. Nothing made Ever’s practices clear on its website or app until NBC News reached out to the company in April. Then, a brief reference was added to its privacy policy, stating: “To organize your Files and to enable you to share them with the right people, Ever uses facial recognition technologies as part of the Service. Your Files may be used to help improve and train our products and these technologies. Some of these technologies may be...

Microsoft Has Developed An App That Helps Blind Users Interact with Photos

Microsoft just released new features on its Seeing AI app. The product, which launched in 2016, serves as a “talking camera for the blind.” The newest addition includes a feature that allows users to touch images on their screens to hear descriptions through the app. Microsoft hopes the new additions to Seeing AI will help users with everyday tasks like reading menus, signs, and books. The hope is that this will enable the blind and visually impaired to enjoy visual content through artificial intelligence. “Leveraging on-device facial-recognition technology, the app can even describe the physical appearance of people and predict their mood,” Saqib Shaikh, software engineering manager and project lead for Seeing AI, said in a blog post. The move comes after other companies like Google and Instagram released features that serve those with hearing and seeing disabilities. Google also recently announced that its AI app Lookout will utilize audio to describe images to blind and visually...

You Can Fly For Free With JetBlue. But First, Get Rid of All Your Instagram Photos

JetBlue has announced a new contest, but their entry requirements may seem a little odd. In order for users to participate, they have to delete all of their Instagram pics, as TechCrunch reported. For their new “All You Can” contest , JetBlue will pick three winners to receive a year of free flights on their airline. After deleting all of their Instagram pics, users enter by posting a photo using JetBlue’s template. There’s no explanation as to why you have to delete all of your old pics in order to enter JetBlue’s contest. Instagram does allow you to “archive” photos instead of outright deleting them, so they can be brought back later. “First, clear all your Instagram pics. Don’t worry, if you win you’ll be able to post pics from everywhere we fly” the company said on its website. In addition to using JetBlue’s template, the contest requires you to tag @JETBLUE and use the #ALLYOUCANJETSWEEPSTAKES hashtag, so it’s not like the entry can really be lost on your profile. However, the...

Black Wall Street In Photos: A Black History Month Project From AfroTech

When you read the history of the Greenwood district in Tulsa, Oklahoma, it almost feels like a fairy tale. Black Wall Street, as it has been known over the years, was a place brimming with Black businesses and affluent African Americans trying to solidify their place in the world. It was home to Black-owned restaurants, hotels, shops, movie theaters, cab companies, and a school system that provided Black children with the best education. Greenwood was flourishing at a time when the rest of the state was as well. In the early 1900s, Tulsa was experiencing an oil boom and many people moved there for a chance to climb up the economic ladder. While Tulsa’s economic prosperity for Black people made it unique, it could not separate itself from the rest of America’s problems. Tulsa was highly segregated, and in a way Jim Crow is one the reasons the Greenwood district was so wealthy and affluent. Laws prohibited Black people from patronizing certain businesses, so Black wealth stayed in the...

Another day, another bug reported from Facebook. On Friday, the social platform said that it discovered a bug in its photo application programming interface (API) that allowed third-party apps to access a broader set of photos than usually permitted. Users who allowed third-party apps access to their photos may have been affected. The bug was caused by an error in a code update for the photo API and may have impacted up to 6.8 million users in total. Facebook said it immediately began investigating the issue. Once it was discovered and notified, the Irish Data Protection Commission (IDPC) concluded the reportable breach under the General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR). The company said in a blog post that photo access was only available from September 13 to September 25, 2018. The bug also impacted photos that people uploaded to Facebook but chose not to post. “For example, if someone uploads a photo to Facebook but doesn’t finish posting it – maybe because they’ve lost reception...
