Aaliyah’s legacy will forever be cemented into the culture, but a new collection honors the late singer for both her exceptional talents and the love she had for Detroit, MI, just in time for International Women’s Day.

According to Complex, KITH has released an exclusive line of apparel featuring photos of the “Rock The Boat” singer that have never been seen by the public before thanks to a partnership with her estate and photographer Robert Whitman.

The collection is a personal one for KITH founder, Ronnie Fieg, who has been a fan of the New York-born, Detroit-raised singer. Her impact continues to touch the lives of generations of fans both past and present. It might even attract even more fans debuting just months following reports previously made by AfroTech about the long journey to clearing the musician’s catalog for streaming services.

Celebrating Women

In celebration of International Women’s Day, all of the money made from the collection, which is currently almost completely sold out, will go toward the Detroit School of Arts. It played a huge role in the upbringing of the superstar as she managed to graduate in 1997 with a 4.0 GPA all while juggling her quick rise to fame prior to her untimely passing in 2001.

“To celebrate International Women’s Day, Kith will be donating 100% of the proceeds from the capsule to be divided between the school and I Support The Girls, a non-profit that collects and distributes essential items, including bras, underwear, and menstrual hygiene products, allowing females experiencing homelessness, impoverishment, or distress to stand tall with dignity,” read a post made from an Instagram account managed by the “One In A Million” singer’s estate.

The school, which offers a variety of fine and performing arts programs including dance, vocal and instrumental music, theatre, and visual arts, was founded in 1992 by Dr. Denise Davis-Cotton.

Not only does the collection include clothing that will support the school, but after the KITH team found out about Aaliyah’s success at the school, including a recital hall named in her honor, they went to Detroit to shoot a short film. It highlighted the dance team and current principal, Dr. Mayowa Lisa Reynolds.

A Collaborative Collection

For Aaliyah’s brother, Rashad Haughton, who also serves as the manager of her estate, the collaboration with KITH was a no-brainer as he cites the accomplishments of Fieg and admits that he is a longtime fan of the brand.

“Aaliyah was born in Brooklyn, grew up in Detroit, and went on to touch the whole world with her light and creativity,” said Haughton. “That’s why I felt that Kith would be the perfect partner to release unseen photos of my sister on their incredible fashion designs.”

The collection includes a variety of articles of clothing featuring never-seen-before images taken by Whitman.
