Viral sensation Tariq is now more than just the “Corn Kid.”
As AfroTech previously told you, Tariq stole the hearts of millions during an interview with Recess Therapy, where he displayed his unmistakable love for corn.
Since then, Tariq has remained busy scoring a partnership with Chipotle and most recently a warm welcome from the state of South Dakota.

“In early August, the world quickly got to know a tiny bit about an amazing boy named Tariq,” said Katlyn Svendsen, global media and public relations director for South Dakota Department of Tourism, in a press statement. “Tariq shared his love of the vegetable corn with Recess Therapy during an interview. This warm and fun, charming video quickly went viral…and we all fell in love with Tariq, affectionately called The Corn Kid, and he was known across the world. So today we’re here in the great state of South Dakota at the world’s only Corn Palace to be here with you [Tariq], and we welcome you and your family to experience some of South Dakota’s finest things.”
Tariq Receives Honorary Title
While being greeted by the Mount Rushmore State, Tariq was surprised with the honor of being named South Dakota’s “Official Corn-Bassador.”

What’s more, Governor Kristi Noem issued an Executive Proclamation declaring September 3, 2022, as “Official Corn-Bassador Tariq Day” in the State of South Dakota. City of Mitchell and Mayor Bob Everson also proclaimed September 3, 2022, as “Tariq Corn Kid Day.”

“Whereas, South Dakota is one of the top corn producers in the nation, providing nourishment to people across the globe but especially to Tariq, a 7-year-old boy who recently discovered that corn was real, and Whereas, since being told that corn was real, Tariq believes wholeheartedly it tastes good, especially with butter, and, Whereas, Tariq loves corn and encourages everyone to try it, even if it’s only a bite,” the proclamation read.
It concluded: “Whereas it is fitting and proper as Governor to make special note of this outstanding young man: Now, Therefore, I, Kristi Noem, Governor of the State of South Dakota, do hereby proclaim September 3, 2022, as Official Corn-Bassador Tariq Day in South Dakota.”

As for the seven-year-old’s response to the outpouring of good news — “Thank you all for being here, and one more thing – cheers to corn!”
