Hip-Hop is big business. What was once considered a niche musical sound has become the soundtrack of our lives. And the genre’s best-known artists have become all the richer for it. “Hip-hop has, and always will, set trends,” says Kim Kaupe, founder of the creative agency Bright Ideas Only, to Variety. “Brands realize they can no longer sit on the sidelines and test what ‘might’ work. They need to be in the mix testing partnerships and trends before they have the data to back it up.” Certainly, too, some rappers do far better than others — and indie rappers, like Tech N9ne, can still make a six-figure salary for themselves. According to Variety, Tech N9ne’s earnings come from an eight-figure digital catalog deal — a deal that was previously unreported to mainstream outlets. But, as one might imagine, the marquee-name rappers — like Drake and Kanye — make the biggest bucks. What’s more, rappers who diversify their portfolios — like Jay-Z and Wiz Khalifa — can continue to make money...

Wiz Khalifa is taking his love for cannabis to new territory. The “See You Again” artist already had the streets of Nevada buzzing when his cannabis brand Khalifa Kush dropped. Now, Californians can find out what the hype is about as Wiz Khalifa celebrated the expansion of Khalifa Kush at Cookies Maywood. The storefront alongside its various branches across California will house the cannabis brand exclusively. View this post on Instagram A post shared by Khalifa Kush (@thekhalifakush) It should come as no surprise that Wiz Khalifa put in the work to bring a premium line of cannabis into the market. In an interview with LA Weekly, Wiz Khalifa revealed he grew a deeper understanding and appreciation for cannabis following a meeting with Cookies co-founder and Bay area rapper Gilbert Anthony Milam Jr. “He actually showed me like real plants, and showed me how to cure and things like that stuff,” Wiz Khalifa said, according to LA Weekly. “Stuff I’d never seen and never really even knew...
The man born Cameron Jibril Thomaz in North Dakota — who would ultimately call Pittsburgh home — exploded onto the Hip-Hop scene back in 2010 with the song “Black and Yellow.” And while Wiz Khalifa would have other success with some subsequent songs — including the super-smash “See You Again” with Charlie Puth, from the “Fast 7” soundtrack — his real success came with businesses outside of music. Perhaps unsurprisingly, the 420-friendly Wiz Khalifa got into various canna-businesses. But that doesn’t mean the rapper is completely out of the music business. He co-founded Taylor Gang Entertainment with his longtime manager and friend, Will Dzombak, and the label is home to successful artists like Ty Dolla $ign. As Khalifa told Forbes back in 2017, it was important for him to keep his hands in the music business despite diversifying his other businesses. “At the end of the day, everything I do business-wise is part of my real-life anyway,” he said . “I still wanna create, and I still...
Rapper Wiz Khalifa is taking an innovative approach to the food industry with his latest business venture. This week, the multi-platinum selling, Grammy and Golden Globe-nominated recording artist announced a new partnership with Nextbite — a Denver-based pioneer in the virtual restaurant space and food on-demand revolution — to launch HotBox by Wiz , a delivery-only restaurant chain coming to cities nationwide this fall. Khalifa’s new venture follows in the footsteps of other fellow musicians who have explored the delivery-only restaurant model, including producer Steve Aoki’s Aoki Pizza , rapper Tyga’s Tyga Bites , and Post Malone’s partnership with Howlin’ Ray — which nearly broke the Postmates app — according to Eater Los Angeles . HotBox By Wiz is set to launch on Oct. 1 in Los Angeles and then nationwide shortly after. Outside of Los Angeles, HotBox by Wiz also has plans to operate in cities like Pittsburgh, Chicago, Denver, Washington, D.C., Indianapolis, Houston, and New...
