You may or may not be familiar with the lyrics: “I just took a DNA test. Turns out, I’m 100 percent that b–h.” The lyrics were the opening of Lizzo’s massive hit, “Truth Hurts” — which was released in 2017 but became popular in 2019 — and signifies that the pop star knows exactly who she is. However, now it’s even more official.

Lizzo is riding high off of her success. And according to an interview she gave to the Wall Street Journal, she has Missy Elliott to thank for that — in a manner of speaking. “Missy Elliott gave me really great advice. A lot of really good advice, all the time, but namely when we were doing the ‘Tempo’ music video,” she said to the outlet. “I just kept shrinking myself, literally, because she’s 5’2” and I’m 5’9”. She was like, ‘Quit doing that. Don’t ever shrink yourself on your set. This is your music video. You are the star. Whenever that s—t is yours, don’t ever make yourself smaller for other people.’ And I took that across the board. Don’t shrink yourself in a literal way to make people comfortable, don’t shrink yourself creatively. Don’t limit yourself as a businesswoman. Don’t shrink yourself when you’re standing up for yourself in your personal life, in your relationships with people.” One thing’s for sure: Lizzo (born Melissa Viviane Jefferson ) isn’t going to shrink...
Lizzo is a tech girlie, now — and we’re here for it. For Logitech’s latest creative campaign, and in true Lizzo fashion, she is seated behind a computer screen sporting a vibrant tulle dress and soon becomes engulfed by Logitech’s newest innovation. And while she chose a tech company to debut her next single, she admits to Forbes she is not the most digital tech-savvy. “The hardware and me don’t get along,” she said. Nonetheless, the experience served as a reminder that technology is a bridge to connect with others. “So it was really a great metaphor of me being, like, ‘How do you work this camera,’ and then I get swooped into this world to be free and then dance and then fly into the sky and bear witness to all of these other great creators and connect with them and be in wonder with them,” Lizzo said, according to Forbes.
Lizzo’s latest business venture has led her to the billion-dollar fitness industry. In a funding round said to be around $200 million for rowing startup Hydrow, the pop star is listed as an investor, CNBC reports. Singer Justin Timberlake was also included in the round. As more gyms reopen and people continue to return, Hydrow aims to remain as a top contender for at-home fitness. According to CNBC, partial funding will go toward ensuring the company can “meet the anticipated demand this holiday season.” “This puts us in the same category as the other leaders in the fitness industry,” Founder and Chief Executive Bruce Smith said. “Until now, we might have been a little bit under the radar because people thought of us as a smaller company. But we’re actually very ambitious.” Hydrow offers on-demand rowing classes and other fitness classes including pilates and yoga. As the at-home fitness rivalry rises, the startup looks to capitalize on its individuality. It also notes its user base...
Lizzo bares it all for her latest partnership with Dove to send a moving message about self-confidence. Glossy reports that the Grammy-winning singer and queen of body-positivity teamed up with the beauty brand for its ongoing Self Esteem Project — a campaign that aims to “transform social media into a more positive and empowering place for the next generation,” according to the brand. The ongoing brand campaign acts as a platform to encourage parents to have the “selfie talk” with their children by advising them to use social media in a way that doesn’t negatively impact their mental health. According to research for Dove’s 2020 Self-Esteem Project, “80% of girls have already applied a filter or used an app to change the way they look in their photos by the time they are 13,” Black Enterprise reports. Now the brand is looking to change that. “Social media is a big part of young people’s lives — but retouching apps and the pressure to post the ‘perfect selfie’ are hurting their...

TikTok is under scrutiny again. This time the controversy centers around rising star, Lizzo. The Grammy award-winning musician, took to her Instagram and posted a video of her singing the words “I know” with a series of text overlays calling out the the social media app for removing clips of her in a bathing suit. “TikTok keeps taking down my videos with me in my bathing suits,” Lizzo’s texts reads. Her text continues with “But allows other videos with girls in bathing suits. I wonder why? TikTok… we need to talk.” Early this year, TikTok admitted to suppressing videos of disable, fat, and queer creators under the guise of protecting them from cyberbullying. However, Lizzo believes she knows why the social media networking app is removing her videos. “When people look at my body and be like, ‘Oh my God, she’s so brave,’ it’s like, ‘No, I’m not,'” Lizzo told Glamour. “I’m just fine. I’m just me. I’m just sexy. If you saw Anne Hathaway in a bikini on a billboard, you wouldn’t call her...
