TikTok is under scrutiny again. This time the controversy centers around rising star, Lizzo. The Grammy award-winning musician, took to her Instagram and posted a video of her singing the words “I know” with a series of text overlays calling out the the social media app for removing clips of her in a bathing suit.
“TikTok keeps taking down my videos with me in my bathing suits,” Lizzo’s texts reads.
Her text continues with “But allows other videos with girls in bathing suits. I wonder why? TikTok… we need to talk.”
Early this year, TikTok admitted to suppressing videos of disable, fat, and queer creators under the guise of protecting them from cyberbullying. However, Lizzo believes she knows why the social media networking app is removing her videos.
“When people look at my body and be like, ‘Oh my God, she’s so brave,’ it’s like, ‘No, I’m not,'” Lizzo told Glamour. “I’m just fine. I’m just me. I’m just sexy. If you saw Anne Hathaway in a bikini on a billboard, you wouldn’t call her brave. I just think there’s a double standard when it comes to women.”
Since her rise to fame, Lizzo, has been an advocate for body positivity and wants other women to embrace their bodies just the way they are. We support Lizzo and hopes she continues to make hits while spreading love despite the negativity and body shaming.
