If you’re blessed to experience love, you’ll experience grief. Karega and Felicia Bailey’s unique love story began in high school and continued when they left their hometown of South Sacramento to attend Hampton University, an HBCU located in Hampton, VA. The evolution of their love story persisted after they became angel parents when they suffered the neonatal loss of their daughter, Kamaiu SOL following a radiant 41-week pregnancy in their seventh year of marriage. In an effort to begin their journey toward healing, the Baileys discovered that the world’s approach to grief not only needed a facelift but the way in which we even treat the practice of grief should be revisited. Together they’ve taken Karega’s book, “SOL Affirmations: A Tool Kit for Reflection and Manifesting The Light Within” and created an album. It provides an audio experience that creates room for them to use their experience with grief to make room for others to do the same. They sat down with AfroTech to talk...
Hampton University was recently awarded $17.7 million as a recipient of The Reimagine Workforce Preparation Grant Program. In collaboration with the Virginia Board of Workforce Development and Old Dominion University, the historically Black institution will use the funding to establish the Virginia Workforce Innovation and Entrepreneurship Center. It will serve as an incubator for aspiring entrepreneurs with hopes of it growing the city’s economy. “Hampton’s proposal is especially promising,” said U.S. Secretary of Education Betsy DeVos, who visited the campus last week. “This program is for all students of all ages, especially adult learners seeking new knowledge and skills to grow their own businesses. Earlier this week, MacKenzie Scott opened her purse for six HBCUs , reports CNN. In a post published to Medium, Jeff Bezos’ former wife pledged to donate a portion of her wealth to several organizations and institutions. The lucky recipients? Howard University, which received $40 million; Hampton University, which received $30 million; Tuskegee University, which received $20 million. Plus, Xavier University of Louisiana — who said the donor wished to remain anonymous — and Morehouse College also announced that they each received $20 million donations and were all named on the list. However, Spelman College did not disclose the donation amount. “I began work to complete my pledge with the belief that my life had yielded two assets that could be of particular value to others: the money these systems helped deliver to me, and a conviction that people who have experience with inequities are the ones best equipped to design solutions,” Scott said of the 116 organizations she donated to,...
