Colin Kaepernick likely had no idea the impact he would have on society from taking a knee. His visible act of protest against police brutality attracted the attention of supporters and critics alike. However, he never let any of the pressure stop him from standing ten toes down (well, knee down) on what he believed was right. Several years into his activism, Kaepernick is adding young-adult author to his arsenal of tools with an upcoming book entitled “Change The Game.”
Colin Kaepernick is on a mission to get the NFL to give him another shot since he was last on the field in January 2017. While the former San Francisco 49ers player is currently adamant on the decision of wanting to have another go at professional football, he’s also made a comeback with receipts proving his impact on the league. When recalling the aftermath of taking a knee during the national anthem in 2016, Kaepernick shared with the “I Am Athlete” hosts that Nike greatly benefitted from his likeness — specifically in a big payout — The Jasmine Brand reports. “When I first took a knee, my jersey went to number one,” he said, according to The Jasmine Brand. “When I did the deal with Nike their value increased by $6 billion. So if, you’re talking about the business side, it shows beneficial. If you’re talking about the playing side, come in, let me compete, you can evaluate me from there.” He continued: “The NFL is supposed to be a meritocracy. Come in let me compete. If I’m not...

View this post on Instagram A post shared by colin kaepernick (@kaepernick7) “When I was 5-years-old, I was given an assignment in school: ‘draw a picture of yourself and your family.’ I drew my white adoptive family with a yellow crayon and then picked up a brown crayon to draw myself,” he said, according to People. He continued: “This revelatory moment taught me an important lesson about embracing my Black identity through the power of self-love and eventually helped me to understand how my brown skin was connected to my Blackness. Above all, I hope that I Color Myself Different can inspire young people to embrace their power, love...
After launching her skincare line in 2021, Naomi Osaka has recently onboarded new members to KINLÒ’s leadership team. The tennis star and her partners at A-Frame Brands have added fellow athlete Colin Kaepernick to the brand’s board of directors, according to Black Enterprise. He will now be joining alongside Osaka, A-Frame co-founders Hill Harper and Ari Bloom, plus Osaka’s agent Stuart Duguid. The announcement comes in addition to the news of him and his partners Jim Nikopoulos and Akim Aliu investing in KINLÒ’s seed round. Osaka’s brand advocates for the Black community’s skin health, which Kaepernick fully supports. “Not only does KINLÒ produce compelling and sustainable personal care products, but it also calls attention to the ways that melanated skin-toned communities are often marginalized in research around sun care and often excluded from clinical studies on skin cancer. I believe KINLÒ has the capacity to right this wrong,” Kaepernick said, according to the outlet.
Is this how we’re kicking off Black History Month? Former Miami Dolphins head coach Brian Flores will officially sue the National Football League (NFL) for “racism in hiring” per reports from ESPN. He will also sue individual teams for the same alleged racist practices, which include the Denver Broncos, the New York Giants, and the Dolphins. “God has gifted me with a special talent to coach the game of football, but the need for change is bigger than my personal goals,” said Flores in a statement surrounding the news. “In making the decision to file the class action complaint today, I understand that I may be risking coaching the game that I love and that has done so much for my family and me. My sincere hope is that by standing up against systemic racism in the NFL, others will join me to ensure that positive change is made for generations to come.”
One thing about Colin Kaepernick — you will never, ever forget him. He could have gone down in history as one of the greatest NFL stars that Milwaukee, WI, ever produced. But the man born Colin Rand Kaepernick had a calling for something bigger than himself. As a result, he made history in yet another, more impactful, way. And though he remains unsigned by an NFL team to this day, he remains unbothered. For him, it’s about creating a larger conversation that will, hopefully, change the world for the better. “I am not going to stand up to show pride in a flag for a country that oppresses black people and people of color,” Colin Kaepernick said at the height of the “taking a knee” movement. “To me, this is bigger than football, and it would be selfish on my part to look the other way. There are bodies in the street and people getting paid leave and getting away with murder. This is not something that I am going to run by anybody. I am not looking for approval. I have to stand up for...
