Midway through the pandemic, in 2022, there were a small amount (19%) of American workers who were working in jobs that were exposed to artificial intelligence (AI). Meanwhile, almost one-quarter (23%) of workers had the least exposure to AI. The remaining job industries varied with AI exposure. And while there are differing opinions about whether AI is taking away jobs from American workers or helping them to skip monotonous tasks, job seekers would arguably agree that they’d love to have an AI program that automatically filled in all of those little boxes in job applications.
Even with a functional resume that focuses exactly on what the job description is looking for, some companies will still require filling out traditional job applications with your job history in sequential order. And this can quickly get tedious. Autofill sorta helps but not enough to avoid job seekers having to edit the automated info afterwards. So with all the extra work involved in using automated systems to fill in job applications, is using ChatGPT to write your resume also this time-consuming?
With Just A Career Summary, This Is What A ChatGPT Resume Looks Like
Although AI has come a long way as it continues to be used, and with human AI trainers helping to guide it along, it is still clumsy with some tasks and remarkable at others. Interestingly, ChatGPT to write your resume is remarkably well done, primarily because it can get creative with only a small amount of information.
This is the career summary (78 words) that was already on my non-AI written resume:
Shamontiel is a full-time freelancer with 20 years of journalism and editing experience, 17 years of digital editing experience, six years in mid-level management roles, 23 years of administrative experience, and 26 years of social media experience. She’s completed approximately 253 interviews for news, mental health and feature stories. Her volunteer leadership projects include being a two-year condo board president and treasurer, a five-time Toastmasters officer, and a yearlong host of a storytelling club.
From just these details and without copying and pasting my actual resume, ChatGPT created the following new resume:

How ChatGPT Identifies Skills For A New Resume
What stood out immediately was the amount of software that ChatGPT included that was not in the career summary. Because it knows the types of daily tasks involved in specific jobs, it makes the assumption that these were daily duties in past jobs (ex. Microsoft Office, Google Workspace, Instagram, LinkedIn, Adobe Creative Suite) and offices held (ex. Vice President of Education, Treasurer). These suggested tasks are all eerily true and may even help job seekers to dust off their own memory banks about past roles, especially those who have been in the job field for a long time. Even for newbie workers, ChatGPT can help make their limited experience more creative.
The Dos (And Don’ts) Of Using ChatGPT To Write Your Resume
The primary task to be aware of while using a ChatGPT resume is that this is also a platform that’s assuming all job tasks. Although it was surprisingly accurate for my background (and this is my first time ever testing a ChatGPT resume), there’s always the chance that it may enter something incorrectly from the career summary if the latter is not written as succinctly. Job seekers may want to draft a few summaries to make sure ChatGPT has enough to work with in order to get to the point of having a resume good enough to share with hiring managers.
Additionally, as mentioned previously when it comes to autofill, ChatGPT does not know everything about your past employers. It’s especially important that a job seeker does not submit a resume without all fields being corrected. For example, a hiring manager doesn’t want to see “Mid-Level Management Roles (Various Employers) Multiple Organizations | [Location] | [Dates].” Those bracketed areas should be updated to include real-life employers. Even hiring managers who are intrigued by AI will not be impressed by carelessness in automated resumes. AI has already done half the work for you; do the other half.
Is A ChatGPT Resume Worth Submitting?
Because of its ability to highlight the most significant parts of your job history with enough detail to help hiring managers understand your background, a ChatGPT resume is worth submitting. But always keep in mind that there may still be employers who don’t want to look at a pile of resumes all in their own designs and formats, and could still choose applications with autofill options to review resumes with some level of uniformity. (This is one of many reasons hiring managers like LinkedIn’s “Easy Apply” option. They know that all of the resumes will be submitted in sequential order and in the format that LinkedIn requires.) With a little patience for varying employer requirements and this newly formatted ChatGPT resume, the same program accused of taking jobs may in fact help job seekers find jobs too.
