Ball may be life but so is business! From early days of playing basketball to now acting as partners on a new rideshare venture that will bring innovation to the states like never before, Ray Young and Khalid Taylor alongside former NBA player turned entrepreneur, Matt Barnes, are here to change the way you catch a ride from here on out. According to a press release provided to AfroTech, HOPP — the first geosocial ride matchmaking app — offers an added layer of comfort to drivers that it claims the competition does not. The app allows users to book rides based on a personality profile set up within the platform that matches them with people whose interests they align with the most. While the partners stress that you can make money just like you would when driving for Uber and Lyft, that is not the driving factor with the new app, which was founded by co-founders Antoine Allain, Eve Mitchell, and Fabrice Allain. “This is a ‘help you’ service. So, if I’m going in a certain direction,...
With Valentine’s Day being right around the corner, Shake Shack and DoorDash have partnered for a new way to bring in the season of love. Food & Wine reports that the fast-food restaurant has partnered with the delivery giant to create a chicken sandwich-themed dating microsite called, “Eat Cute,” a play on “meet-cute.” The new food-based dating site is described as a “spicy dating site to help singles find their perfect match over their shared love of Shake Shack’s new Buffalo Chicken Sandwich,” according to the outlet. “This February, Shake Shack wants all our single fans to find love in a hopeless place — online,” said Shake Shack’s chief marketing officer Jay Livingston in a statement. “By partnering with DoorDash for ‘Eat Cute,’ we are hoping to use our Buffalo Chicken Sandwich to light the initial spark and help singles everywhere spice up their dating experience.” The idea for the “dating site for chicken lovers” was sparked from chicken sandwiches being in DoorDash’s top 10...

Making deliveries can be a great way to make some extra part-time — or even full-time — income. While you won’t earn the benefits that come with a full-time job, you can make good money and choose your own schedule — vital for those taking care of family or with other jobs. You can find today’s most-popular delivery gigs, such as Amazon Flex, DoorDash, and Instacart, on your smartphone. If you have an insured vehicle, you can get started by downloading one of these apps and completing the job application form. Once accepted, you’ll be able to pick and choose your delivery shifts or pickups just by logging in. And you’ll be able to deliver items to each customer’s door to practice social distancing. Amazon Flex Given Amazon’s status as the world’s largest retailer, there are always Amazon deliveries to make. Through the Amazon Flex app, users sign up for an available shift, head to a local Amazon warehouse to have their cars or trucks loaded, then make deliveries. Flex drivers are...
DoorDash is one of the most popular on-demand food delivery companies out there. How it operates: the company contracts delivery drivers (also known as D ashers ) to deliver prepared food from restaurants to customers who have placed orders online or through the mobile app. Like similar rideshare companies, DoorDash advertises that each Dasher becomes their own boss and can enjoy the flexibility of choosing where, when, and how much they earn. So, h ow much does DoorDash pay exactly? First, we must determine how Dashers are paid. DoorDash breaks down their pay model as Total Earnings = Base Pay + Promotions + Tips. A Dasher’s base pay, also known as the delivery fee, can range from $2-10+ and is contingent upon three things: estimated time, distance, and desirability of the order. Deliveries that take more time or are further in distance will earn more pay. Dashers keep 100% of the delivery fee. There are also promotions (or bonuses) that can increase your pay. Promotions...
Earlier this year, DoorDash came under fire for its payment structure , which included subsidizing drivers with tips. Essentially, DoorDash gives the tip to drivers, but they count it towards base pay. The problem has been around for years with not only DoorDash but other delivery services. After a case where an Instacart shopper was given a $10 tip for an order but only got 80 cents in base pay — the company ended up changing its policies completely. However, DoorDash has decided to double down on its questionable payment structure. In a blog post titled “Improving the Dasher Experience,” CEO Tony Xu wrote that the company will make changes by….breaking down the earnings after a delivery: “We have always provided transparency on the front end of each dash by showing Dashers the guaranteed minimum, the location, and name of the restaurant, the drop-off location, the size of the order, and the estimated time to complete the delivery. We are now rolling out even more transparency...
Uber and Lyft drivers, along with a list of other gig workers in California, may have something to cheer about now that a new law has passed to give contract workers more protections. The California state Assembly passed AB5, a bill that would require status changes to contract workers to complete essential tasks for companies. The law is also set to impact exotic dancers and manicurists; however, hairstylists, doctors, lawyers, real estate agents, and financial advisers will be exempt from the rules because they work as true independent workers under their own companies, according to Vox. Under AB5, companies can only label workers as contractors if the worker: (a) is free from the company’s control, (b) is doing work that isn’t central to the company’s business, and (c) has an independent business in that industry. If they don’t meet all three of those conditions, then they have to be classified as employees. Misclassification of workers has helped major companies save money for...
Today, DoorDash officially launched Kitchens Without Borders , its new initiative aimed at promoting the businesses of immigrants and refugees. In a blog post introducing the program , CEO Tony Xu wrote: “DoorDash’s mission has always been to connect people with possibility by creating valuable opportunities for entrepreneurs to reach new audiences. For immigrant communities facing heightened barriers to success, that goal has become even more important — and for me, it’s at the heart of the company’s story.” According to the initiative’s website, it aims to spotlight the “human stories of immigrant and refugee business owners, fostering deeper connections to the people making the food we enjoy every day.” The way DoorDash has decided to do that is pretty creative. The website hosts a series of vignettes, where each San Francisco Bay Area business owner can discuss their own experiences. Plus, each restaurant will actually be promoted on DoorDash’s app, and get free delivery for up...
DoorDash has announced a pilot program with mRelief, the startup helping families across the nation sign up for food stamps through voice, digital and text applications. There are a few hurdles when it comes to applying for food stamps. From wait times, paperwork and being approved, families risk going through weeks of not securing the funding necessary to help buy groceries. DoorDash and mRelief’s partnership is providing emergency food vouchers to assist families while they wait for food stamp approval in San Francisco. Families who sign up for CaliFresh—California’s food stamp program—in San Francisco are given $35 in DoorDash credit for their next meal. The partnership is set to run from February until September, according to a post from DoorDash’s blog. “Our work at mRelief is about bringing the simplicity of technology typically used to provide on-demand services, to things that are critical needs” mRelief co-founder Rose Afriyie told Techcrunch. The partnership is big news...
