6 Sisters Simultaneously Pursue Nursing After Experiencing Homelessness During Their Childhood

According to PEOPLE, after spending the past 10 years without a home of their own, six sisters have taken the next step in their pursuit of becoming nurses.

Following their parents’ loss of their home in 2013, the Lawrence sisters spent quite some time switching from one family member or friend’s home to the next.

“It was challenging,” said sister Lauren, who is now 24. “There were a lot of very bumpy, depressing times.”

Although they spent a lot of time moving around, which meant school was not always the priority, their dad, David, encouraged the sisters to never give up on their education.

Luckily, they obliged and it wasn’t long before the six oldest Lawrence sisters, whose ages today range from 19 to 25, enrolled in a homeschool program to one day receive their GED.

“He didn’t want what we were going through to hold us back,” Dominique, who is now 25, said of her father.

Today, he continues to beam with pride for the amazing feats they continue to achieve.

“I’m so happy that they’ve done this together,” David said. “I always tell them, ‘Life’s not fair. And when it throws you a curveball, you gotta adjust to it and keep going.’”

In 2019, the sisters received their GEDs and next up they conquered Nassau Community College located on Long Island, NY.

Just two years later, they enrolled in SUNY Old Westbury, also on Long Island, where they received bachelor’s degrees in public health in May 2023.

Now, the Lawrence sisters are well on their way to becoming nurses all at the same time.

In August 2023, all six of the siblings started their master’s program in public health at SUNY Downstate Health Sciences University in Brooklyn. They will head to nursing school once this program is complete.

“It’s been quite an adventure,” said Danielle, 22. “But what really pulled us through is our faith in God and in each other.”
