At the age of 37, LeBron James is still dominating the NBA, but what will be the next chapter for the legend? Maybe actually owning an NBA team.

Back in March 2021, James revealed he had his sights set on becoming an official NBA team owner.

“My goal is to own an NBA franchise,” LeBron said, according to Yahoo! Sports. “And it’ll be sooner than later.”

According to American sports analyst and podcaster Bill Simmons, LeBron James’ dream may become a reality in Las Vegas, Nevada. While there isn’t any certainty to James’ involvement, there are reports stating that the NBA could expand to Vegas and Seattle at an undisclosed date and the Fenway Sports Group may have their eyes on the Vegas team.

“I have some intel,” Simmons said, according to Yahoo! Sports. “I think the league is going to expand to Vegas and to Seattle. And I think the leading contender to get that Vegas team is going to be the Fenway Sports Group. They have Liverpool, they bought the [Pittsburgh] Penguins. They’ve been circling different NBA teams for a while. I think they looked at Minnesota. And I think they’re the leading contender for Vegas. I heard, combined, we’re talking $6.5-7 billion for the two teams.”

Will an NBA team be next for James?

If Fenway Sports Group became an official NBA team owner, LeBron James could boast a new achievement under his belt.

“If I had to bet on a LeBron scenario, it would be for him to be involved with whatever happens with that,” said Simmons, according to AS. “Where he is the point man in that Vegas team. And I haven’t heard that mentioned. I don’t care if it gets aggregated because I think I’m right. I think that is scenario A for LeBron. He wants to be an owner. I think he wants to run one of these teams.”

An NBA spokesperson says Simmons’ prediction has “no truth to it.” Therefore, only time will tell if LeBron’s dream of becoming a team owner will bring him to Vegas.

In addition, according to NBA rules, players must be retired to acquire or hold a direct or indirect interest in the acquisition of NBA teams.

What teams does LeBron James already own through Fenway Sports Group?

As AfroTech previously reported, the Los Angeles Lakers player became a part-owner of the Boston Red Sox through his partnership with Fenway Sports Group. In November 2021, James also became an owner of the Pittsburgh Penguins after Fenway Sports Group and its partners purchased the National Hockey League team for $900 million.

Fenway Sports Group also owns Liverpool Football Club of the English Premier League, Roush Fenway Racing, regional sports network NESN, Fenway Sports Management, and FSG Real Estate, USA Today reports.

Before his partnership with Fenway Sports Group, James already had ownership in Liverpool Football Club.
