Time and time again it’s been clear that Black artists are often the trendsetters of the music industry. Just as fast as trends move, so does technology and these superstars are always one step ahead in the gear that they rock.
One of the latest fads is digital fashion through augmented reality (AR) and virtual reality (VR) technology, according to Input.
Bringing Fashion To The Metaverse
Thanks to the visionary designer Asher Levine, pop stars including Beyoncé, Doja Cat, and Lil Nas X have worn tech-based designs that are next level and getting tens across the board in the virtual fashion space.
“I’m really excited about digital fashion,” Levine told the outlet. “A tentacle jacket could cost me $50,000 to produce, but now I can make a digital [version] that people anywhere can purchase and wear in augmented reality.”
Iconic Moments In Digital Fashion
The futuristic designer is the mastermind behind Lil Nas X’s bodysuit in his viral music video for “Call Me By Your Name.” In addition, his work was also seen on Doja Cat’s custom high-tech catsuit for her 2020 MTV VMAs performance for the chart-topping singles “Say So” and “Like That.” And last (but certainly not least), he was behind the “life mask” in “Mine” by Beyoncé featuring Drake, according to Levine’s website.
“This ethereal look for Doja Cat included weeks of prep work, from designing, material innovation and highly intricate fabrication, the Alien Fish Creature is brought to life!” Levine wrote via Instagram.
To The Future
Digital fashion is picking up the pace to continue spearheading futuristic clothing that shakes up the industry.
Brands such as Nike and adidas are already caught up to speed when it comes to the metaverse. In December 2021, Nike acquired RTFKT — a virtual sneaker company.
“This acquisition is another step that accelerates Nike’s digital transformation and allows us to serve athletes and creators at the intersection of sport, creativity, gaming and culture,” said John Donahoe, President and CEO of NIKE, Inc. in a statement. “We’re acquiring a very talented team of creators with an authentic and connected brand. Our plan is to invest in the RTFKT brand, serve and grow their innovative and creative community and extend Nike’s digital footprint and capabilities.”
