Warner Bros. is jumping into the non-fungible token (NFT) business just ahead of its summer blockbuster release of the “Space Jam” sequel film.

In an official partnership with social NFT platform Nifty’s, Warner Bros. has announced the launch of a limited-edition collection of NFT items featuring characters from the upcoming “Space Jam: A New Legacy” film starring NBA star LeBron James, a press release reports.

This marks the first time a major motion picture has adopted digital collectible technology as a marketing tactic to engage with passionate fans around the world to commemorate the fandom of a movie franchise.

“We are excited to partner with Nifty’s on this new way for our audiences to engage with their favorite characters, connect with other fans and enjoy our movies on and off the screen,” Pam Lifford — President of Warner Bros. Global Brands and Experiences — said in a statement. “‘Space Jam: A New Legacy’ is fun for everyone and it was important to us to give audiences new and exciting ways to celebrate their fandom.”

The new partnership was encouraged by Nifty’s desire to drive home a message of accessibility for this digital technology. As part of its joint venture with Warner Bros., the platform and studio are offering up 92,000 NFT collectibles tied to the upcoming film and will be giving anyone who registers on its website and visits the “Space Jam 2” gallery a Space Jam NFT for free — which, according to Fast Company, would normally be priced at $2.99 each.

Fans will also have a chance to earn a second NFT by sharing a social media post about the new collection, a press release reports. The digital collectibles will include “two-dimensional and three-dimensional versions with five levels of rarity.”

“Space Jam: A New Legacy” is set to hit U.S. theaters and HBO Max on July 16.
