An old saying states, “A lie don’t care who tells it.” And recently, the City of New York gave in to what thousands hold as their truth. Black and Latinx teachers have alleged that the state licensing exam was biased for years. After years of contention with a major lawsuit, the city conceded to the claims, and so far, $835 million have been awarded to educators.
More exposure to the environment at Tesla for Black employees has to come to light, and it’s not looking good — at all. The Los Angles Times reports that the American electric vehicle and clean energy company is currently under fire after several Black employees allege unfair and racist treatment occurring at the company’s California plant. One of the most alarming claims along with repeated incidents of being subject to racial slurs is that a number of Black employees were allegedly moved to the back of the plant when Tesla CEO Elon Musk would visit because “they didn’t want a Black face up there.” These accounts of alleged racial discrimination at the plant add to the lawsuit filed against Tesla by the California Department of Fair Employment and Housing on Feb. 9. AfroTech previously reported that the suit was filed on behalf of over 4,000 Black employees, both current and former, making it the largest racial discrimination lawsuit filed by the state due to the number of people...
A federal jury in California has found that a Black ex-worker of Tesla is entitled to more than $130 million in damages and fees. According to The Wall Street Journal, Owen Diaz — who worked as an elevator operator in the Fremont, CA factory in 2015 and 2016 — was subjected to a “racially hostile work environment” during his tenure at the plant. Diaz was regularly called racial epithets at work, was subjected to racist imagery in the bathroom and elsewhere, and was also subjected to other untold horrors simply because he was Black. The crux of Diaz’s lawsuit against Tesla, however, was multi-fold. In addition to the horrific and racist treatment he was subjected to, Diaz alleged that the company not only failed to take reasonable measures against such racial harassment but also alleged that the company “was negligent in its supervision or retention of an employee, causing harm to Mr. Diaz,” per the Journal. The jury ultimately agreed with Diaz’s assessment and awarded him $130...
It pays not to be racist. Bloomberg reports that Tesla Inc. has just awarded a former Black employee over $1 million after they failed to stop his supervisors from calling him the N-word. Melvin Berry received a very rare discrimination award by an arbitrator followed by a closed-door proceeding. In the past, Tesla has been known to ignore the commonplace use of racial slurs that have been used at the electric-car maker’s northern California plant. For years the company not only refused to only address the racial slurs but was also slow to clean up graffiti of swastikas and hate symbols that were scrawled in workplace common areas. Berry fought with the company for years after he was met with discriminatory and racially charged actions from both co-workers and his acting supervisor during his tenure with the company. He was hired as a materials handler for Tesla in 2015 before quitting less than 18 months later. “I hope the world knows that an arbitrator found Tesla treats its...
