Two Sisters Just Made History as Owners of the World's First Oat-Milk Ice Créme Shoppe

These Black women are whipping up something special! Courtney Blagrove and Zan B.R. are the sisters behind the world’s first oat-milk ice créme shoppe located in New York’s Lower East Side — Whipped – Urban Dessert Lab. According to a press release, after seeing the struggles of their family and the other 75% of Black people who face living with lactose intolerance, they decided to find a solution through dairy-free ice cream. Thanks to Blagrove’s background in research, her Ph.D. in metabolism and nutrition, and her own woes that come with having a nut allergy, the sisters were able to create a dairy-free option that makes it difficult to tell the difference between plant-based and dairy cream. Oate™ was birthed from this creation and this hard scooped ice crème™ is made entirely using oat-milk! According to Pix11 , Moore is a seventh-grade student at Poly Prep in Dyker Heights, a small neighborhood in Brooklyn, New York. She began playing the piano at age two and immediately fell in love. Moore is a member of the New York Philharmonic’s Very Young Composers program, an after-school program that exposes students — as young as 8-years-old — to the orchestra, per Because of Them We Can (BOTWC). Since joining the program, Moore has had the chance to create a piece of music that debuted this past October. Not only was her talent on display for the entire world to see, but she made history in the process as one of their youngest composers ever. “Every child has the ability to be creative and tell their story,” says Gary Padmore, director of the Very Young Composers program. He expresses that the program was created to give young children from diverse...
