HBCU Puts $10M Of Its Cares Act Funding Directly Into The Hands Of Its Future Black Doctors, Dentists & More

Meharry Medical College is ensuring the future of its Black doctors, dentists, and more is secure. In 2021, graduate students were reportedly surprised with $10,000 cash. The grand gesture — made by Meharry’s administration — allocated $10 million in COVID-19 relief funding from the CARES Act to surprise 956 students. “We’ll gift each of you $10,000 in cash,” Dr. James Hildreth, the school’s president, said in a video message, according to Kaiser Health News. “You heard me right.” The financial relief proves to be timely for Meharry’s students, who played a pivotal role in providing aid at COVID-19 testing and vaccination sites. The students have operated as a vehicle of change, and the Historically Black College and University (HBCU) is hopeful the generous contributions will be helpful to advance the future careers of the cohort. “We felt that there was no better way to begin distributing these funds than by giving to our students who will soon give so much to our world,” Hildreth...

These Metro Detroit Doctors Run the First Mother-Daughter Orthodontics Practice in the U.S.

Mother-daughter duo Jana and Janelle McQueen operate the first and only mother-daughter orthodontics practice in the United States, according to WDIV . Dr. Jana opened her practice in 1998 when her daughter, Dr. Janelle, was just a baby. Now, after following in her mothers footsteps — even attending the same college and dental school — the pair run three McQueen Orthodontics Specialists centers in Metro Detroit. Both women graduated top of their class from Meharry Medical College and Howard University. “I didn’t ask her to do this,” said Dr. Jana. “It just warms my heart to have her as my legacy; the comfort of knowing once I decide to retire, the practice is going to be in good hands.” They are now working to help other young women professionals like Dr. Janelle grow in this male-dominated industry by offering mentoring and job shadowing to individuals who are interested. “Especially the Black mothers that come in here and they’re bringing their daughters in here, they’re like, ‘Oh...

With Its Largest-Ever Grant, HBCU Meharry Medical College Plans to Serve the Underserved

Meharry Medical College has always upheld the philosophy of “serving the underserved” and strived to make this their greatest legacy during its 144-year existence. According to Forbes, its legacy has been threatened by the student loan debt enemy that impacts close to 930 students that attend Meharry across its three schools. This year (2020), the school of medicine’s graduating class averaged $285,743 in debt. The American business magazine also reports that not only is student loan debt a challenge but Historically Black Colleges and Universities, who receive 70 percent less in endowments than non-HBCUs, are historically underfunded. “We have to live up to the same standards as the other 170 medical schools,” said Dr. James E.K. Hildreth, Meharry’s president on the topic of accreditation. “There’s this assumption that somehow we’re different because we happen to be predominately Black,” Dr. Hildreth said. “I’m not diminishing the HBCU part because it is special, and we want to...

Thanks to This Black Scientist a COVID-19 Antiviral Drug Could Be on its Way

Black and brown communities have been hit hard with the effects of the COVID-19 pandemic, ravaging neighborhoods across the country. However, medical professionals are working vigilantly to develop treatments for the illness. According to NBC News , Black scientists from Meharry Medical College have reportedly been developing an antiviral drug for the virus, and hope to test the treatment in the next two weeks. Meharry Medical College — founded in 1876 in Nashville, TN — was originally built to teach enslaved Africans how to practice medicine and assist underserved communities, as reported by NBC News. For years, Meharry has had a hand in producing over 4,800 Black doctors, 83 percent of whom work in Black or underserved communities, NBC News reports. Dr. Armen Henderson, a Meharry alum, has been helping to test the homeless community in Miami, FL — for COVID-19 — since March. The Florida doctor was recently racially profiled in front of his home before going to volunteer, as...
