MacKenzie Scott Donates $12M To The National Medical Fellowships To Help BIPOC Students Pay Tuition

In a recent move by MacKenzie Scott, the culture is one step closer to health equity and diversifying the health fields for people who look like us. According to ESSENCE, Scott donated $12 million to National Medical Fellowships (NMF), the organization helping to create health equity by providing scholarships for medical students who are Black, Indigenous, or People of Color (BIPOC). “NMF is deeply grateful that MacKenzie Scott has recognized the impactful work we have been doing for more than 75 years to advance health equity by providing scholarships to students underrepresented in medicine,” says NMF Board of Directors Chair and alumna Sandra B. Nichols, MD, FAAFP, MHCDS, MS. “This gift sends a message to these students who are interested in pursuing a career in healthcare. It tells them they are needed, welcomed, and will be supported as they work to attain their degrees so they may transform the health care system into one that serves all communities equally.”

Here's How Teen Activist Alycia Kamil Inspired MacKenzie Scott's $4.2B Donation Spree

We have a Chicago teen to thank for MacKenzie Scott’s most recent donation spree. USA Today reports Scott, the ex-wife of Amazon CEO Jeff Bezos, recently donated a whopping $4.2 billion of her fortune to various entities across the country — most notably HBCUs. The third wealthiest woman in the world recently posted an article to Medium titled 384 Ways to Help and touched on how a food donation drive led by a then 19-year-old young woman in Chicago inspired her to create her own. “In March, a 19-year-old girl in Chicago sent a group text to her friends suggesting they buy supplies for people in their neighborhood who had lost their jobs,” wrote Scott. “She posted two Google forms– one for people who need help and another for people with help to give — and by two days later they’d raised $7,000. ‘We’re really excited.'” Alycia Kamil — the woman responsible for the kind acts that influenced Scott — is a poet, educator, and activist who tells USA Today that she was blown away after...

Billionaire philanthropist MacKenzie Scott — former wife of billionaire and Amazon CEO Jeff Bezos — is spreading her wealth all around this week to offer support to those affected by the pandemic. “The pandemic has been a wrecking ball in the lives of Americans already struggling,” Scott wrote in a Medium post. “Economic losses and health outcomes alike have been worse for women, for people of color, and for people living in poverty. Meanwhile, it has substantially increased the wealth of billionaires.” According to Scott’s post, she’s donated over $4 billion to 384 diverse organizations over the past few months, and of those, she’s gifted $1.7 billion to several HBCUs, theGrio confirms. HBCU recipients of Scott’s generous donation include Bowie State University, Alcorn State University, Clark Atlanta University, Virginia State University, University of Maryland Eastern Shore, and Morgan State University. Jeff Bezos' Former Wife MacKenzie Scott Donates Millions to Six HBCUs

Earlier this week, MacKenzie Scott opened her purse for six HBCUs , reports CNN. In a post published to Medium, Jeff Bezos’ former wife pledged to donate a portion of her wealth to several organizations and institutions. The lucky recipients? Howard University, which received $40 million; Hampton University, which received $30 million; Tuskegee University, which received $20 million. Plus, Xavier University of Louisiana — who said the donor wished to remain anonymous — and Morehouse College also announced that they each received $20 million donations and were all named on the list. However, Spelman College did not disclose the donation amount. “I began work to complete my pledge with the belief that my life had yielded two assets that could be of particular value to others: the money these systems helped deliver to me, and a conviction that people who have experience with inequities are the ones best equipped to design solutions,” Scott said of the 116 organizations she donated to,...
