African Politician Awut Deng Acuil Makes History As First Woman to Lead a South Sudan University

For the first time ever, a South Sudan university’s governing body will be led by a woman. Awut Deng Acuil — who is currently the Minister of General Education and Instructions for the Government of South Sudan — will serve as the head of the council at the University of Bahr El-Ghazal, Face2Face Africa shares from a BBC report. News of Achuil’s appointment was reportedly announced during a presidential decree that was read on the South Sudan Broadcasting Corporation, the national broadcaster. Acuil, who is no stranger to making history in her country, also previously became the first woman to serve as South Sudan’s Minister of Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation, according to Face2Face Africa . Monica R. Lawson Makes History as First Black Woman to Rise From Chaplain to Colonel in the U.S. Army

The U.S. Army just promoted its first active-duty Black woman chaplain to the rank of colonel, according to the Richmond Free Press . Chaplain Monica R. Lawson makes history as the first active-duty Black female chaplain to rise up to the rank of colonel. Lawson is an African Methodist Episcopal minister, chief of recruiting and accessions for the U.S. Army Chaplain Corps, and a Spelman alum. “As an African-American woman who has always been proud of the skin that I’m in, in this time, this is a bright spot in a sea of what seems to be darkness never-ending. Pinterest Responds to Discrimination Claims by Appointing its First Black Board Member

Image sharing and social media platform, Pinterest, appointed Andrea Wishom to their Board of Directors, making her the first Black person ever appointed to the company’s board. The move to appoint Wishom, who serves as president at Skywalker Holdings, comes after Pinterest received allegations of racism and poor pay by former employees back in June and July of this year. After the social media platform claimed to stand in solidarity with Black Lives Matter, Ifeoma Ozoma, Aerica Shimizu Banks, and other unidentified individuals told Washington Post that they had been mistreated by their white peers. The allegations were followed by a campaign that called for Pinterest to increase pay for Black employees. A website and arranged walkout emerged to support Ozoma and Banks.
