Art Basel is one of the most highly anticipated events on the global art calendar, connecting art lovers, collectors, curators, and artists worldwide. The international art fair is held annually in Basel, Switzerland; Miami Beach, FL; Hong Kong, China; and Paris, France — with Miami Beach recognized as the premier art show of the Americas, per its website. While the event is most commonly known as a high-profile contemporary art fair, Art Basel Miami has evolved into a diverse cultural event combining art, culture, design, fashion, and business. Today, technologies like NFTs (non-fungible tokens), OVRs — online viewing rooms that let art enthusiasts join events through their computer screens — and immersive art experiences have transformed how art is viewed and purchased. As such, the fair has become a significant platform intersecting art and technology, according to a 2021 panel discussion at the event. Ahead of the 2024 edition of Art Basel Miami Beach, Art Basel unveiled its new...
Miami Art Week and Art Basel events take place Dec. 2 through 4 this year, and the annual celebrations will include some NFT (non-fungible token) exhibits. As AfroTech previously reported, NFTs can be anything that has been digitally authenticated, from music to art to gifs and beyond. Hence, it only makes sense to see them during Miami Art Week and Art Basel. Suppose you’re looking to brush up on your knowledge of the growing NFT industry ahead of the art week events. In that case, NFT BZL is hosting a day-long symposium featuring NFT experts on Nov. 30 to educate attendees on digital art. Here are some NFT exhibitions we think you should check out during the annual art week.
The iconic art of Jean-Michel Basquiat is heading to the digital space. On Dec. 3, rare images of Basquiat turned into non-fungible tokens (NFTs) will be auctioned in Miami, according to a press release. The “Our Friend, Jean” NFT Auction will take place on the Trillernfts.com marketplace — a first-of-its-kind company. The NFTs are set to be released during Basquiat’s historic week-long exhibition — curated by The Bishop Gallery and hosted by Triller — at Art Basel from Nov. 29 through Dec. 4. The event will feature photos of Basquiat that were taken by co-curator Alexis Adler, the artist’s close friend and roommate. Some of Basquiat’s earliest artwork will be highlighted during the digital curated experience. The artworks will be on loan from collectors who were friends of Basquiat including Adler, Al Diaz — Co-Creator of SAMO — Jane Diaz, Hilary Jaeger, Katie Taylor and Lucy Sante.
