Angela Bassett is one of the most legendary actresses of our time. Just take a look at a few of the numerous classics the Oscar-nominated star has starred in: “What’s Love Got to Do with It,” Boyz n the Hood,” “Waiting to Exhale,” “How Stella Got Her Groove Back,” and more. Recently, Bassett gave a stellar performance as Ramonda in Ryan Coogler’s “Black Panther: Wakanda Forever.”
Climbing toward the top of the ladder through sports, entertainment, or the world of fashion, opens doors. One of those doors is education, specifically earning honorary doctorates from an accredited institution or university. The feat highlights the contributions of people who are breaking barriers and inspiring others. This year, entertainers Stevie Wonder, Ludacris, and Angela Bassett, are just a few names who have forged a path beyond their respective industries and can collectively toast to earning their doctorate titles.
Angela Bassett became the highest-paid woman of color on broadcast television when she renegotiated her salary for the hit Fox series, “9-1-1.” Vanity Fair reported that the veteran actress now receives $450,000 per episode — and this salary encompasses both her acting and her executive producing of both the flagship show and its spin-off, “9-1-1: Lone Star.” And while, certainly, $450,000 per episode is more than the average working actor is receiving, it’s nowhere near as much as Angela Bassett deserves — given her history, her pedigree, and her talent. “ Higher per-episode paydays were received by Sofia Vergara, who earned a reported $500,000 an episode of ‘Modern Family’ by the end of that show’s run, and Kaley Cuoco, who reportedly received $900,000 per episode of ‘The Big Bang Theory’ during her sitcom’s final seasons,” reported the outlet. That said, the veteran actress isn’t just a performer and a producer. Rather, she’s also a wife and a mother: married for more than 25...
Angela Bassett has received another distinction. The prolific actress and Oscar nominee has received an honorary doctorate from Old Dominion University (ODU) in Virginia, People reports. The achievement was given to Bassett the same weekend she presented the keynote speech for ODU’s commencement ceremony.
When Angela Bassett renegotiated her salary for “9-1-1, ” her ask made headlines. According to Vanity Fair, her $450,000 per episode salary was dubbed as “historic” because it meant that she could now be one of the highest-paid actresses of color in network television. But, as the outlet correctly points out, Bassett’s salary bump wasn’t just for her acting chops (although to be fair, that’s reason enough to pay her that much). Rather, that salary also encompasses her duties as the executive producer of both the flagship show and its spin-off, “9-1-1: Lone Star.” When that’s factored in, it means that dollar for dollar, she’s not making anything near what she deserves. What’s more, what Angela Bassett is making pales in comparison to what some other Hollywood actresses are making. “Higher per-episode paydays were received by Sofia Vergara, who earned a reported $500,000 an episode of ‘Modern Family’ by the end of that show’s run, and Kaley Cuoco, who reportedly received $900,000 per...
Black Girl Magic was in full effect as legendary actress, Angela Bassett mentored a select group from Girls Make Beats during her voice over recording for Ford’s new 2020 Escape. Girls Make Beats is a non-profit that encourages girls to pursue careers as DJs, music producers, and audio engineers. According to Girls Make Beats, only six women have been nominated for the Grammy’s Producer of the Year award, and the non-profit is determined to change that. The group got the chance to sit down with Bassett and discuss what it means to be a girl of color in the entertainment industry. According to a USC study , only two percent of music producers are women. The study surveyed 600 popular songs from 2012 to 2017. During the studio recording session, Bassett references this stat and gave the group of girls words of wisdom. “You have to feel so good about your gift and what you’re able to give that those numbers don’t mean anything,” said Bassett. The chance to get a behind the scenes look...
