Tiffany Haddish Seeks To Raise $25M To Open A Grocery Store Catering To The BIPOC Community In Her Hometown

The actress and comedian is working on opening Diaspora Groceries, a grocery store set to be located in the Crenshaw area of Los Angeles, CA, according to The Washington Post.

For years, Haddish has been raising funds with the goal of $25 million to bring the affordable store to life. What’s more, it is set to cater to people of the BIPOC community.

Along with quality, local sustainable food, Diaspora Groceries aims to help people learn how to cook and properly manage their finances.

“There will be specialty things and a normal market and a nonprofit-like educational component, where people can take cooking classes and a financial literacy class,” Haddish shared, per The Washington Post.

Haddish’s vision comes after her once surviving off $500 a month in order to afford a home, which she recounted back in 2021 about her experience of living in poverty and facing food insecurity.

“Food insecurity is a real thing for me,” Haddish told Essence. “Something I’ve experienced the majority of my existence. I would say the last five years have been more like, ‘this is what I’m going to eat.'”

Now that she understands the link between healthy eating and living and that “food is medicine,” she is on a mission to provide access to South Los Angeles.

“I’m a firm believer that once you understand how money works, once you understand how food works, you become a healthier, happier human being,” she told The Washington Post. “And when you’re healthier and happier, the family’s healthier and happier, and the community’s healthier and happier.”

Further details on Diaspora Groceries’ official grand opening have yet to be announced. However, according to its website, they’re currently accepting applications for BIPOC business owners to apply to have their products in the store as it “aims to build authentic and lasting partnerships” with them.
