Now more than ever, creatives need resources to help propel themselves to the next level.

To do that, Steve Stoute’s UnitedMasters headed to Brooklyn, NY on May 5, 2022, to build a better future for creators at the fourth annual SelectCon.

Programming throughout the afternoon included DJ Drama, Coodie, Hit-Boy, and Jim Jones to help emerging artists, creatives, and entrepreneurs prepare for the future. There was even a fireside chat with Stoute and Issa Rae that was fitting for a grand finale in the evening.

Before a DJ line-up featuring DJ Drama, Angel + Dren, and more invaded, though, Issa Rae talked the music industry, what’s next, and more.

On The Music Industry:

“I’m still learning about this industry and just being a creator, I still value creators. On the Hollywood side, I do my best to make sure there is a pipeline, that there’s comfort, that there’s transparency, and I don’t see that on the music side.”

On What's Next:

“I want a studio in LA, in South LA specifically. I want to continue to build in my community. There are so many opportunities to help build my neighborhood and surrounding neighborhoods. I just want to kill it in my field.”

On "Awkward Black Girl" And "Insecure:"

“They were two different shows. I had ‘Awkward Black Girl’ — it was 24 episodes. I was okay with this and I feel like that’s an existing body of work that’s going to live on. With ‘Insecure,’ I wanted a whole new show. I  also like 24 or 25 when I came up with the idea. I wanted the show to feel more grown, more like an HBO show.”
