Deion Sanders had the opportunity to ink a lucrative contract during his time as a student-athlete at Florida State University. However, the football icon went on to learn from his mistakes regarding his purchases at the time.
During an interview on Shannon Sharpe’s Club Shay Shay, Sanders admitted to making some “young and dumb” choices with his money.
“Coming out of my senior year, I bought a [Mercedes-Benz] 560 SEC. Cut the top off — dropped that thing. And I bought a BMW M3. That was probably one of the dumbest buys. Not because it was a BMW but I didn’t know how to drive a stick [shift],” Sanders shared.
“Ignorant. I was just ignorant…So I get in the car and I’m like, ‘What’s this?’ I’m glad we can talk about this stuff now ‘cause it’s ignorant,” he continued.
Although Sanders made unwise purchases during his youth, he has gone on to guide today’s generation not to follow the same route.
“So now, I’m able to counsel young men on [not] making stupid purchases,” he said.
The money for Sanders’ previous purchases came from the contract he signed with the New York Yankees while at Florida State, as previously reported by AfroTech.
“I had [$250,000] going into my senior year,” Sanders told host Shannon Sharpe. “The Yankees paid my tuition and I was a walk-on. So, I could stunt like no other because you couldn’t challenge me.”
He continued: “I had played six weeks in the summer and made a ton of money,” he said. “And then, I know I’m going to be a top-five pick in the draft going into my senior year. So, it was a lovely day. And I had a crib, owned a golf course in Tallahassee, a condo and I had my dorm room. So, I was living.”
