Although the legendary Kobe Bryant is no longer here with us, his legacy lives on.

Throughout his life, Bryant was more than just a basketball player. He made history in many ways. In 2018, he made history when his short film — “Dear Basketball” — took home the best short film Oscar at the Academy Awards. To this day, Bryant is the only athlete to win an Academy Award, and he also helped a veteran Disney animator take home his first Oscar, as well.

But more than just films, Kobe Bryant was involved in a variety of business ventures. He was also a devoted philanthropist and frequently said that he was grateful that his celebrity allowed him to help other people in need.

“Basketball is something that will come and eventually go, the beauty in that is trying to use that time to inspire others and provide some sort of escape for them,” he said, according to People Magazine. “I think that’s something that lives well beyond the game of basketball and is probably most important.”

His NBA legacy cannot be denied, but his impact on other people through philanthropy and business ventures will last through generations. Here are five more pieces of Kobe Bryant’s lasting legacy that prove that Mamba really is forever.

The Charities He Supported

Shortly after news of his passing hit the airwaves, former NBA player Metta World Peace told CNN that Kobe Bryant left a legacy of philanthropy in his wake.

“He’s leaving a legacy, and he’s teaching people how to be more than just an athlete,” he said.

During his lifetime, Bryant granted more than 200 wishes through the Make-A-Wish Foundation. He and his wife, Vanessa, were also the earliest supporters of the National Museum of African American History and Culture.

The Mamba and Mambacita Sports Foundation

According to the foundation’s official website, The Mamba and Mambacita Sports Foundation — named in honor of Kobe Bryant and his daughter, Gianna — continues their legacies by helping underserved kids achieve their dreams in professional sports.

Bryant’s widow, Vanessa — who is also Gianna’s mother — serves as the face of the organization today.

The Bryant-Stibel Venture Capital Firm

Founded in 2016 with social entrepreneur Jeff Stibel, the Bryant-Stibel venture capital firm serves as a strategic partner to many early-stage companies. They’ve invested in companies like Art of Sport (AOS), ringDNA, and LegalZoom.

Kobe Inc.

In 2014, Kobe Bryant launched Kobe, Inc., to help grow brands in the sports and entertainment industries. One of the firm’s earliest investments was in the BodyArmor sports drink company, where they invested $6 million in exchange for a 10 percent stake in the company. When Coca-Cola bought out a minority stake in the company in 2018, ESPN reported that Kobe, Inc., got a valuation of $200 million.

Granity Studios

Launched in 2013 as a film development company, Granity Studios now produces podcasts, television shows, and books.

In 2018, their short film “Dear Basketball” took home the best animated short Oscar, making it the first time a professional athlete won at the Academy Awards.
