Users of Square and Cash App are experiencing failures.

On Sept. 7, 2023, Square acknowledged that sellers were having issues accessing their accounts and processing payments.

“Since around noon PT on Thursday, sellers have been unable to access accounts or process payments due to a systems outage within Square. We know you trust us with your business, and these situations add challenges to running your operations. For that, we are truly sorry,” Square said in a statement posted to X, formerly Twitter.

Cash App also had released a similar statement via X on Sept. 5, 2023, that it was investigating an issue with pending Cash Ins. The issue was later resolved within the hour. However, it was not long until the company circled back to flag new failures that prevented users from sending and receiving money and purchasing a Cash Card, among others.

“Some customers may be experiencing issues sending payments, purchasing Cash Card, and accessing other features. Our team is actively working on a fix. If you encountered an error in app, please don’t reattempt the action. We’re working to resolve everything as quickly as possible,” the company posted on X.

It added, “Your ongoing patience is greatly appreciated. Check http://status.cash.app for the most up-to-date information.”

To no surprise, users of both Block-owned services aren’t amused with the discrepancies that do not appear to have been resolved (at the time of this writing). Some small business owners have been vocal about how this will impact their business.

“It’s not just Cash App down. The entire Square host is down and has been down for the last several hours. I feel so bad for us small businesses because clients/customers can’t even book on our sites or make payments,” one X user wrote.

#Square being down allll day has really affected my business sales today! A loss of revenue for me means a loss of a 15yr customer for you! Time to find a new credit card processor,” said Real Estate Agent Tonshay Boggs via X.

As of now, both financial service platforms appear to be working on resolving the matter.

The most recent update from Cash App reads, “We are continuing to resolve the outage. Our services are mostly back online. You may experience brief delay with certain services. If you experience a delay, there is no need to reattempt.”

Square told users at 5:55 a.m. CST via X, “We’ll keep you updated on the status of the outage & next steps via email, on issquareup.com, and on social media. Trust that we can and will do better in the future. Thank you for bearing with us as we emerge from this outage together.”
