While Perry is now among the group of Black billionaires in the U.S., this was not always his truth. In fact, he once lived in his car while he struggled to make things shake as an aspiring filmmaker in Atlanta, GA. Tyler Perry, who has given the culture the beloved “Madea” character for years throughout his screenplays and eventually in the film space, struggled to make his rental payments in the late 1990s and was once evicted from his apartment. On Aug. 17, Sony Music Publishing announced to extend Tyler Perry’s worldwide agreement with Tyler Perry Studios (TPS). The Oscar and Emmy award-winner owns the largest production studio in the nation and made history as the first African American man to own a major production studio in 2019. Sony Music Publishing’s Visual + Media division (previously known as Broadcast Media Rights) has worked alongside Tyler Perry Studios and music supervisor Joel C High for the last decade. The extension with Sony guarantees authorized music for over 60 productions, comprising 26 films, 20 plays, 1,5000 series episodes, and future projects, Market Insider previously reported. Tyler Perry just hit billionaire status! Forbes estimates that with his mega-production studio in Georgia, plus his homes, and planes, Perry has earned more than $1.4 billion (pretax) since 2005. A true self-made visionary, the “Madea” franchise creator is responsible for around 1,200 television episodes, 22 feature films and about two dozen stage plays.
