Born Asunción Cummings in New York City, Sunny Hostin was born in 1968 to a Puerto Rican mother and a Black father. Raised in the Bronx, Hostin ultimately graduated from the Notre Dame School of Law, according to Marie Claire. After working her way through various legal positions — including working as a law clerk in the Maryland Court of Appeals — Hostin became a trial attorney in the U.S. Department of Justice’s antitrust division, before becoming a federal prosecutor that specialized in child sex crimes.
