My HPE Journey: Working for a Major Technology Company as a Young Minority

Since I was a teenager, I always dreamed of working on the cutting edge of technology. I wanted an exciting career path that would allow me to explore the world’s fastest-growing industry and grow as a professional. Luckily, I found that and more at HPE. My career with Hewlett Packard Enterprise started in May 2012 at age 18. I just finished my freshman year of college at Prairie View A&M University, a Historically Black College, located 45 minutes outside of Houston, TX. I attended a conference for NSBE (National Society of Black Engineers) and landed my first technical internship as a Consumer Notebook Test Intern. As a young minority, working for one of the world’s largest technology vendors was initially intimidating. I was the youngest person on a team of middle-aged, seasoned professionals. In addition, I was the only person in my family who worked in corporate America, let alone the IT field. With this in the back of my mind, I wondered how I would be perceived by my team and...

Reddit Quarantined Subreddit r/The_Donald For Violence, But Here’s Why They Won’t Ban It

President Donald Trump generally isn’t too fond of social media –even though he uses it more than any president we’ve had — often accusing platforms of harboring biases against conservatives. However, there’s one site that Trump seems to like, Reddit. This may be due to the subreddit, r/The_Donald, which has not only been referenced by Trump himself but by his team as well. Brad Parscale, Trump’s campaign manager, even revealed that he would visit it daily back in 2016 . Trump also hosted an open interview on the forum that same year. However, the subreddit was placed under quarantine on Wednesday, due to repeated “misbehavior,” which included inciting violence. The decision was made only two days after Media Matters for America reported that r/The_Donald forum members had issued calls for violence. This came after Oregon’s governor told law enforcement to bring back Republican state senators who fled the state so a climate change bill wouldn’t pass. It’s important to note that...

Congress Calls On Big Tech To Answer For Its Response to the Christchurch Shooting

Today, Chairman of the House Homeland Security Committee, Rep. Bennie G. Thompson, wrote letters to executives from tech companies — including Facebook and YouTube — over their response to the Christchurch shooting and how video of the horrific event was able to spread online. “I was deeply concerned to learn that one of the shooters live-streamed this terror attack on Facebook, and the video was subsequently re-uploaded on Twitter, YouTube, and other platforms,” Thompson said. “This video was widely available on your platforms well after the attack, despite calls from New Zealand authorities to take these videos down.” “You must do better,” Thompson added. “It is clear from the recent pattern of horrific mass violence and thwarted attempts at mass violence — here and abroad — that this is not merely an American issue but a global one.” Thompson’s letter called for Facebook CEO Mark Zuckerberg, YouTube CEO Susan Wojcicki, Twitter CEO Jack Dorsey, and Microsoft CEO Satya Nadella, to...

Tech Companies Are Scrambling To Remove Video of The Christchurch Shooting

Since the Christchurch massacre, social media platforms have scrambled to keep video of it off their platforms. Days after the attack, it’s not difficult to find clips or still images from it. To many, this opens up questions about tech companies’ failures to regulate hate on their platforms, and who shares responsibility in moments like this. After the shooting, where at least fifty Muslims were killed in two New Zealand mosques, archives of the alleged shooter’s page revealed only 10 people had tuned into his Facebook Live broadcast of the event, according to The Wall Street Journal . Although the original video didn’t have many viewers, it exploded across social media in the days following the attack. Facebook, which has faced the brunt of criticism due to its site hosting the livestream, says it removed 1.5 million videos of the New Zealand shooting in the 24 hours after the shooting was broadcast. In the first 24 hours we removed 1.5 million videos of the attack globally, of...

This Tech Entreprenuer Created An App To Help You Edit Your Social Media Blunders

Thanks to the magic of a free and open Internet and social networking, this generation has the ability to document every day of their entire lives. On the flip side, once posted there’s no way to erase the occasional stupid comment, regretful photo or random rookie mistake…or, is there? Photo: Giphy As co-founder of On Second Thought , Maci Peterson has patented a system that allows users to recall and edit their messages in real time. The inspiration came to the 30-year-old entrepreneur three years ago, when she accidentally texted an ex-boyfriend something she later wished she could take back. I mean, who hasn’t been there? In 2014, that inspiration lead Peterson to launch an app used to recall text messages. Now she and her partner are taking it a step further and expanding the technology for use on social networking platforms. In fact, the patented recall system will be made available on all forms of telecommunications. Brilliance! No one deserves a permanent, easily sharable...
