Marlon Wayans has announced the return of the “Scary Movie” franchise.

This represents a significant change for the series, which was originally rooted in the Wayans family. USA Today reports that the first two films were directed by Keenen Ivory Wayans, with Marlon and Shawn Wayans serving as writers and actors for some of them.

According to ABC News, the original “Scary Movie” (2000) grossed over $277 million worldwide.

Despite “Scary Movie” becoming a pop culture staple, the Wayans family’s involvement in the franchise fizzled out after the second film. According to AFROTECH™, Marlon Wayans claimed that The Weinstein Co. “snatched” the franchise from them after it was initially passed over by other production studios.

The Wayans family reportedly learned through a publication that they would no longer be involved.

“The second one they rushed us into, and by the third one, they didn’t want to pay the money, so they snatched it. We found out on Christmas that they hired somebody else to go do it,” Marlon shared with Kevin Hart on the “Comedy Gold Minds” podcast.

He added, “We didn’t walk away from a franchise. They didn’t want to make our deal, and they snatched it. We never walked away from our franchise that we created. It was taken and us being the creatives that we are were like ‘Alright, bet.’”

He continued: “‘Now watch what I create.’”

On Oct. 29, 2024, Marlon revealed the franchise’s return after 24 years since its initial release.

“Last week i said i had a HUGE ANNOUNCEMENT to make well here it is… WE’RE BACK!!! After nearly 20 years, the Wayans brothers are finally going to give the fans what they’ve been asking for… a return to the SCARY MOVIE franchise! We’re looking forward to having fun on the big screen again,” he wrote on Instagram.

Keenen Ivory, Marlon, and Shawn will come together to write the script for “Scary Movie 6,” which is projected to begin filming in 2025. As of this writing, it is unclear who will be cast or who will direct the film, according to USA Today.
