This year’s CultureCon was the place to be — especially with it being held in a city that Black culture lives, breathes, and sleeps. What’s more, Twitter’s Culture and Community team joined in on the fun with events that showcased the brand’s commitment to holding space for Black creatives.

“Our main goal is [always] to have people walk away feeling inspired, empowered, and armed with the resources they need to thrive and build their respective communities and businesses on Twitter,” God-is Rivera, Global Director of Culture and Community at Twitter, told AfroTech.

What is the Culture and Community Team?

With a focus on creating connections and supporting voices for underrepresented communities, this team is on a mission to bridge the gap for creatives of color by equipping them with both resources and people who can help take their dreams to the next level.

“As Twitter’s Culture and Community team, we’re centered on creating connections with and supporting the voices of historically marginalized communities that use our platform to amplify what matters most to them. We do this by meeting them wherever they are — celebrating their impact both on and off Twitter,” Rivera continued. “Being a platform dedicated to celebrating Black culture, CultureCon provides the perfect setting for us to further build our connection with this community. To do this and mark our debut at the conference, we’re excited to bring a series of conversations aimed at elevating their voices, inspiring them and encouraging collaboration.”

The Importance of Community

On Monday (May 2), the team kicked off a week of events with an open mic Spaces hosted via the Twitter Voices platform. Creatives, artists, poets, and storytellers were invited to share their art in written form.

It’s events like this that expand on the brand’s mission to provide creatives with a space to use their voice and share their stories.

“Home to a diverse range of unique cultures, conversations and voices, community is naturally built into Twitter’s DNA. With this as our North Star, we want Twitter to continue being a platform that recognizes, identifies, celebrates, supports, and amplifies voices from historically marginalized communities, also known as #TwitterVoices because these are the very people who make it so vibrant and unique,” Rivera concluded. “Building trust with these influential voices is key to the work we do so we also want to continue offering a space to listen, openly receive feedback around our service and multiple products, and learn from it.”

She continued: “We’re always available via the TL and DMs but to extend the ways through which the community can stay up-to-date on what we’re doing, join the conversation and create connections, we also recently launched our dedicated @TwitterVoices handle on Twitter. ”
