Naturalistas can now get their hands on hair products from Black hair care royalty.
The Root reports that the family of pioneer Madam C.J. Walker — the first African American woman millionaire — has created a reboot of her iconic hair line that has launched at Walmart.
Madam C.J. Walker's Legacy Lives On
Walker’s great-great-granddaughter A’Lelia Bundles — who previously spoke with AfroTech — and Cara Sabin, CEO of Sundial Brands, came together for MADAM by Madam C.J. Walker.
“For years, I’ve been writing and speaking about her. And someone always asks if they can still buy the products. Now I can say ‘yes, and they’re great!’” Bundles exclaimed, according to the outlet.
Sabin added: “For the past several years, there has been a lot of focus in Black hair care on natural hair and the pursuit of the perfect coil. We wanted to honor all of the different facets of how [a Black woman] wants to express herself.”
Healthy Hair Is The Mission
The line for the new generation is to honor the trailblazer’s legacy of prioritizing healthy hair.
“For the past several years, there has been a lot of focus in Black hair care on natural hair and the pursuit of the perfect coil,” Sabin said. “We wanted to honor all of the different facets of how [a Black woman] wants to express herself.”
She continued: “The original line from Madam Walker was all about scalp health, which is the key to healthy hair. A lot of scalp products are very stripping, which can be the death of textured hair. We wanted to strike a balance between having healthy ingredients for the scalp and hydrating textured hair.”
Similarity To Original Hair Products
With authenticity at the forefront, the collaboration has created high-quality, yet affordable hair products. Selling at select Walmart stores and online, all of the items are below ten dollars. Bundles told the outlet that one of them specifically is similar to Walker’s OG product.
“Our homage [to Madam Walker] is the Wonderful Hair and Scalp Balm to Oil. The consistency looks like the original product, but the technology has been updated to replace some of the ingredients we no longer use,” Bundles said.
