NFL Player Derrick Henry Joins The Nashville SC Ownership Group, Says It's 'Truly A Dream Come True'

“As a kid growing up in Florida, I imagined being a professional sports owner and the opportunity to do that with a Major League Soccer club is truly a dream come true,” Henry said via the team website, according to ESPN.

He continued: “My investment in Nashville SC is way more than financial, it’s truly an investment in the city of Nashville. The chance to be part of a club like Nashville SC, especially after seeing what they are accomplishing in the community, was an opportunity I did not want to miss.”

The recent announcement marks Henry as one of the only NFL players to double as minority owners of a soccer club, according to the outlet. He’s now on the list with Denver Broncos quarterback Russell Wilson, Kansas City Chiefs quarterback Patrick Mahomes, and Houston Texans running back Mark Ingram.

As previously reported by AfroTech, Wilson and his wife Ciara became minority owners of Seattle’s Major League Soccer franchise, the Sounders, in 2019.

Joining Henry for the ride are actress Reese Witherspoon and technology investor Jim Toth.

Just recently, Marshawn Lynch became a minority owner in the sport of hockey.

The former Seattle Seahawk joined the NHL’s Seattle Kraken, which is reportedly valued at $875 million, per a previous AfroTech report.

“This is something I never would have imagined,” Lynch said in a press release. “I always dreamed of playing on a professional team but owning one is something special. As I look back on some of my accomplishments — I retired before I was 30 and now being an owner of a professional club at the age of 35 – I’m gonna continue to count my blessings.”
