Issa Rae is the latest celebrity to forge a partnership with educational streaming platform MasterClass.
The Emmy-nominated actress, writer, and producer announced this week that she’s teaming up with MasterClass — the e-learning company that offers a lineup of celebrity-led courses — to debut her first online course sharing her journey “creating outside the lines” in Hollywood, Variety reports.
Through a series of 14 video lessons, Rae will discloses how she’s navigated Hollywood as a Black creator, and share an inside look behind her do-it-yourself method to help others take their creative ideas to the next level.

Lessons in Rae’s online course include finding your voice, developing your story, creating a pilot series, collaborating with others, and diversifying your skills, plus more.
According to MasterClass, Rae also breaks down scenes from her breakout web series “The Misadventures of Awkward Black Girl,” as well as HBO’s “Insecure.”
Overall, Rae’s course is a deep dive into the inner workings of creating in Hollywood, and shares practical tips and exercises to help users sharpen their creative minds and establish better habits.
Storytelling is where Rae got her Hollywood start and has taken her quite far over the last decade of her content creations.
“Issa is one of the most celebrated creators in recent history because of her authenticity and unflinching boldness when it comes to storytelling,” said David Rogier, founder and CEO of MasterClass, in a press statement. “Her MasterClass at its core is about inspiring action and not being discouraged by roadblocks. Our members will walk away feeling motivated and ready to act on the ideas and stories that have been brewing within them.”
This candid digital course allows Rae to also share some personal anecdotes of past failures and disappointments that only encouraged her to keep going and turn her vision into a reality.
“A lot of people enter the industry thinking their ideas have to be perfect and fit into a specific kind of box, but that’s never been part of my process,” she said in a statement. “In my MasterClass, I want to tell you everything that I’ve gone through, every mistake that I’ve made and everything that I’ve learned so far, so that you can do better than I did. If you have a desire to create, this class is for you.”
Rae’s class is available now through MasterClass’ $180 annual membership, which provides access to more than 100 classes.
