Innovation is more than just saying— it’s doing. At Walmart, engineers and developers are bringing innovation to customers through e-commerce, artificial intelligence, and robots. The retail industry is going through rapid changes and teams at Walmart are staying ahead of the game by constantly putting customers first and by finding the best technologies to suit their needs.

Over the last few years, Walmart has been bolstering up its technologies to ease processes for its associates while providing a better shopping experience for its customers. Engineers at the company have rolled-out a number of automated assistants that can clean floors, sort inventory, and dispense customer orders at our stores.

“Our associates immediately understood the opportunity for new technology to free them up from focusing on tasks that are repeatable, predictable and manual,” John Crecelius, senior vice president of Central Operations for Walmart United States, said. “It allows them time to focus more on selling merchandise and serving customers, which they tell us have always been the most exciting parts of working in retail.”

Innovation at Walmart doesn’t end at automated assistants. Walmart gives tech workers opportunities to solve some of retail’s hardest issues. For example, the company created the Intelligent Retail Lab (IRL) to explore the possibilities that artificial intelligence can contribute to the store experience. IRL gathers information about what’s happening inside the store through an impressive array of sensors, cameras, and processors that tell associates if shelves need to be restocked or when inventory is low.

“Technology enables us to understand so much more — in real time — about our business,” Mike Hanrahan, CEO of IRL, said. “When you combine all the information we’re gathering in IRL with Walmart’s 50-plus years of expertise in running stores, you can create really powerful experiences that improve the lives of both our customers and associates.”
