Twitter made waves when they changed its blue check verification policy and snatched the status away from several white nationalistaccounts. Twitter had come under fire for inconsistent rule enforcement, prior to its recent actions.
Now, the major social media platform is going one step further and suspending a few white nationalist accounts due to its implementation of new rules, LA Times reports.
Accounts with “logos, symbols, or images whose purpose is to promote hostility and malice against others based on their race, religion, disability, sexual orientation, or ethnicity/national origin,” will be among the suspended group per Twitter’s new rules. There isn’t a list of examples that fall under that list, but Twitter will review each complaint individually.
“In our efforts to be more aggressive here, we may make some mistakes and are working on a robust appeals process,” Twitter wrote in its blog post.
Far-right group Britain First as well as well-known white nationalist leaders Jayda Fransen and Paul Golding’s Twitter accounts have been suspended since the accounts violated the “abusive content” rules.
Another suspended account was white nationalist, online magazine American Renaissance and the magazine replied to the banning with “this isn’t goodbye.”
In case you’re wondering, no, Richard Spencer wasn’t among those suspended. Spencer did note that he lost over 100 followers in the last 24 hours and didn’t “see any systematic method to the #TwitterPurge.” Former KKK grand wizard David Duke wasn’t hit, either. Some of Duke’s posts – including a “It’s Ok To Be White” tweet – were hidden under the “sensitive material” warning that Twitter has also implemented, but no signs of a suspended account yet.
Twitter has not commented on any individual accounts at this time.
