Many who grew up in the 80s and 90s are quick to associate the nostalgia of heading back to school with the bright and cheery supplies designed by Lisa Frank. The notoriously private artist is best known for crafting lunchboxes, stickers, toys and trapper keepers covered in dolphins, unicorns, pandas and other adorable critters that decorated classrooms for decades. Before she rose to fame, Frank grew up in Michigan’s Bloomfield Hills (one of America’s wealthiest cities ), the daughter of a higher-up in the automotive industry who supported her creative pursuits. “ My dad was an art collector, my mom had a little kiln in our basement and we would make pottery. I think from about age five on, they sent me to art classes, and I was a huge colorer. HUGE. I think to keep me quiet, they would bring the coloring books and crayons, and I would fill up the books,” Frank told Urban Outfitters in a rare interview. She went on to attend Cranbrook Kingswood School with Mitt Romney, then headed...

When Tyra Banks announced that she was bringing a tech-friendly theme park focused on modeling to California, the tech world sat up and took notice. As AfroTech reported, ModelLand will be somewhat like a theme park with augmented and virtual reality games and attractions. While ModelLand doesn’t have an opening date yet, according to Variety, it is also set to have food and shopping vendors, making it ideal for visitors of all ages. Despite its name, ModelLand is inclusive— not just for those looking to enter into the fashion scene — its goal is to redefine beauty standards through tech. “I am being very deliberate to make sure this is something families can come to,” Banks said. “I’m not creating this to service people who want to become models or are models.” And that was just the first of many accomplishments by Tyra Banks over the course of a career that first began nearly 30 years ago. Through her boundary-breaking hard work in the modeling industry — which she eventually...
Tiffany Haddish admits that she didn’t always make the soundest of financial decisions. Being a struggling comedian isn’t easy, to begin with, but coming from her background compounded the issue. Today, however, she makes enough money to care for her mother (who is institutionalized) and her grandmother (who has Alzheimer’s). She’s even started to invest in other businesses, such as BeGreatTV, while also serving as a mentor for children who are in foster care. She’s also passing on all the information she’s learned as the host of a new show, “Hotline Cha-Ching.” Tiffany Haddish told Yahoo that the overall goal with the streaming series is to give people like her the financial advice she never received growing up. “I want them to save their money, have an understanding of what interest rates are, how you can grow money, and how you can get the money to work for you instead of you working for the money,” she said. Despite a few starts and stops, according to Celebrity Net Worth,...
OnlyFans is no longer just only for adult content. The streaming service wants a new reputation that pushes a different agenda for its creators — starting with its app. According to several reports, OnlyFans — which has only previously been accessible through its website — created a brand-new app earlier this year that offers videos with some of its biggest creators. What comes as a surprise from the notoriously explicit platform is that its new app shows no nudity. That’s right, OnlyFans is getting wholesome to add its services to Apple and Google app stores. The ad-free app is called “OFTV” and it officially launched back in January, but this week OnlyFans says that it’s marketing the app to attract those who aren’t already subscribed to the streaming service. It reportedly offers a library of over 800 videos that includes original content from chefs, yoga instructors, podcasters and more. It even features an original series called “Unlocked” that shares conversations with...
While most two-year-olds are playing with Barbie dolls and having tea parties, two-year-old Kashe Quest of Los Angeles, CA, is making history by becoming the youngest American Mensa member. Our sister site, Blavity, reports that it was the little girl’s mother, Sukhjit Athwal, who first noticed that her daughter was something special. “We started to notice her memory was really great. She just picked up things really fast and she was really interested in learning. At about 17, 18 months, she had recognized all the alphabet, numbers, colors, and shapes,” she said. And that’s not all. Kashe Quest can also identify all 50 states by shape and position on a map. She is learning to read, can sign over 50 signs in ASL, and can identify elements on the periodic table by their symbols. She is even learning Spanish, as a second language. After an IQ test, it was determined that the precocious two-year-old has an IQ of 146, well above the genius level, and well making her qualified to become a...
Two Buffalo State College graduates are proving that their story is nothing if not inspiring. The SUNY college — a state college in the New York public university system — put out the official announcement about Cesar Galarza and his daughter, Clarimar, who are part of this year’s graduating class. The elder Galarza worked as a welder and a pastor to put himself through school and graduated Buffalo State College with a degree in social work. “It was fantastic to go to school with my daughter,” said Cesar Galarza, to the college. He said he was inspired by his daughter, Clarimar, who encouraged him to get his degree alongside her. And even though he faced a language barrier — as a native of Puerto Rico, English was his second language — he said it was important to him to persevere. “I had to learn to write in English,” he said. “But I also questioned if I was too old to go to college. Did I wonder: Have I lost my chance? [But] once I got to college, I took it seriously.” Clarimar,...
When it comes to wealth, Black Americans have always gotten the short end of the stick. In part, a lot of this is due to the lack of financial literacy which comes from a deep history of racism that has held our community back for centuries. “It is the most important issue facing Black Americans. Period,” said Kevin Cohee, Owner, Chairman & Chief Executive Officer of OneUnited Bank. In an interview with AfroTech, he told us the role that the largest Black-owned bank in America plays when it comes to not only teaching the importance of financial literacy but providing the community with the tools and resources needed to survive and thrive in a place where the playing field has been everything except level. “It’s fairly understandable how we got into this situation,” continued Cohee. “We were slaves, then we weren’t but we were given no education, we were given no money, no compensation, and we were denied the opportunity to do things like for example, live in neighborhoods where...
Tiffany Haddish’s “She Ready” slogan takes on a new meaning for her latest venture. According to The Hollywood Reporter, the actress and comedian has announced that she’s partnered with career accelerator Ready to Succeed to launch an internship program for foster youth in the new year. The goal for the program is to place these foster youth in positions at Haddish’s production company, She Ready Prods, and offer tangible job opportunities in media, arts, and entertainment. Haddish has previously been vocal about her upbringing growing up in the foster care system. Now she wants to be a vessel for other less fortunate children to give them opportunities she would’ve hoped to have at their age. “I believe that children that come from different cultures deserve a chance to work in the industry,” she told THR. “and I would like people that look like me to be able to represent me too in the industry.” View this post on Instagram A post shared by She Ready Foundation...
