On Tuesday, Google announced its Advanced Technology External Advisory Council, a new group that will ensure the company is following the “responsible” development of AI. In a blog post, Kent Walker, Google’s senior vice president of global affairs, wrote, “This group will consider some of Google’s most complex challenges that arise under our AI principles, like facial recognition and fairness in machine learning, providing diverse perspectives to inform our work.” The principles Walker refers to were released last summer , after Google was forced to drop a contract with the Department of Defense’s Project Maven (now connected to Anduril Industrie s). The project intended to deploy computer algorithms in war zones and was met by backlash from Google’s own employees.
