California May Ban Contracts With Tech Companies Working With ICE

Homeland Security’s Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) has consistently demonstrated an interest in using tech to target immigrant communities. Now, in California, lawmakers are considering terminating all contracts with tech companies that work with ICE and banning the state from investing in them. The Sanctuary State Contracting and Investment Act was introduced by Democrat Assemblyman Rob Bonta. If the bill passes, state and local agencies would be prohibited from entering into contracts with companies providing a federal immigration agency with any data broker, extreme vetting, or detention facilities services “unless the state or local agency has made a finding that no reasonable alternative exists.” If passed, the California Department of Justice would compile and publish a list of all contractors working with ICE that people could consult as a resource. Googlers Against Transphobia Call For Removal of Heritage Foundation President From AI Board

Last week, Google announced a new external advisory board to to ensure the company works towards “responsible” AI development. People quickly honed in on one board addition: Kay Coles James, president of the conservative think-tank, the Heritage Foundation. Now, over 1,200 Googlers — along with academic, civil society, and industry supporters — have signed a petition calling for James’ removal, citing her transphobia, homophobia, and anti-immigrant positions as cause. “In selecting James, Google is making clear that its version of ‘ethics’ values proximity to power over the wellbeing of trans people, other LGBTQ people, and immigrants,” Googlers Against Transphobia and Hate wrote in a Medium post. DoorDash Launches New Initiative Promoting Immigrant And Refugee Business Owners

Today, DoorDash officially launched Kitchens Without Borders , its new initiative aimed at promoting the businesses of immigrants and refugees. In a blog post introducing the program , CEO Tony Xu wrote: “DoorDash’s mission has always been to connect people with possibility by creating valuable opportunities for entrepreneurs to reach new audiences. For immigrant communities facing heightened barriers to success, that goal has become even more important — and for me, it’s at the heart of the company’s story.” According to the initiative’s website, it aims to spotlight the “human stories of immigrant and refugee business owners, fostering deeper connections to the people making the food we enjoy every day.” The way DoorDash has decided to do that is pretty creative.
