Michael Jordan’s sports memorabilia remains highly sought after.
AFROTECH™ has covered multiple auction sales featuring memorabilia from Jordan’s legendary NBA career. This includes a jersey worn during his 45-point game during the 1996-1997 season with the Chicago Bulls, which sold for $4.7 million at Sotheby’s auction house in November 2024.
“One of the finest Michael Jordan jerseys ever to come to auction, MJ wore this road-red jersey for 5 months and 17 games during the Chicago Bulls legendary 1996-1997 championship season,” Sotheby’s detailed on their Instagram. “In the 1990s, the jersey’s image landed on trading cards, magazines, newspapers, and collectable posters like these from Starline or Costacos Brothers that decorated the walls of kids’ rooms around the world.”
In February 2024, a set of six individual sneakers sported by Jordan during his victorious championship season sold for $8 million, which was the most for any game-worn sneakers in history, Forbes reports.
“Today’s record-breaking price is a testament to the GOAT,” said Sotheby’s Head of Modern Collectibles Brahm Wachter, at the time, per ESPN.
In March 2025, the demand for Jordan’s memorabilia remains at an all-time high. Sotheby’s listed a game-worn and autographed jersey from a Chicago Bulls preseason matchup at the Peoria Civic Center Stadium in Illinois for auction. It was photo-matched by MeiGray and Sports Investors Authenticated.
“One of the most exceptional elements of this artifact – and the way it was able to be so extensively authenticated – is the fact that it was clearly repurposed from at least one, or multiple, previous players. Underneath both the name “Jordan” as well as “23” one can see dark stains where – it appears – multiple previous player’s names and numbers were previously located,” a description of the jersey on Sotheby’s page read. “The jersey itself is stylistically slightly different from the jersey worn by Jordan during the regular season, featuring a different font of numbers on the front and reverse of the jersey. Jordan switched jerseys for his regular season debut, and for the remainder of the 1984-1985 regular season.”
Sotheby’s auction of the jersey closed on March 26, 2025. It sold for $4.215 million, according to Sports Illustrated. This marks the fifth-highest selling jersey in auction, notes ESPN.
It was photomatched by MeiGray and Sports Investors Authenticated and is believed to be the first Jordan jersey worn in the NBA.
