NBA legend and philanthropist Michael Jordan is investing in the creator economy.

Morehouse Media Center

According to a press release, Morehouse College held a ribbon-cutting ceremony Wednesday, Sept. 23, for its new Multimedia Center in the Department of Journalism in Sports, Culture and Social Justice. The space will support “reporters, editors, content creators, and media innovators for global media organizations” and will focus on the following areas:

  • Creative productions
  • Digital storytelling
  • Sports broadcasting
  • Podcasting
  • Filmmaking
  • Projects supported with emerging media technologies
Students will also receive instruction from award-winning content creators and training on industry equipment.

More Than $1M Investment

Since Morehouse started its journalism program in 2022, more than 60 students have earned advanced degrees in the field, and nearly 120 alumni have gone on to pursue careers in media and sports. Those numbers are expected to grow following an investment of more than $1 million from six-time NBA champion Michael Jordan and Jordan Brand to support journalism- and sports-related scholarships at the men’s Historically Black College or University (HBCU) in Atlanta.
“We’re pleased to support Morehouse College and its students as they prepare for the next chapter of their careers,” Shauncey Mashia Stelly, senior director global purpose for Jordan Brand, said, according to the press release. “We hope this space provides students with valuable opportunities to learn, create, and grow.”

Mikki Harris, chair of the Journalism in Sports, Culture, and Social Justice department and an associate professor at Morehouse, commented:

“When we launched our journalism major in 2022, we envisioned a program grounded in the liberal arts where students engage the ‘why’ behind storytelling and social impact. The generosity of Michael Jordan and Jordan Brand made it possible to expand our curriculum and build the Morehouse Multimedia Center as the practical complement to that vision. The Center serves as the bridge between critical thinking and professional practice for our students.”
