Remy Ma had to think twice before cashing out on her first major payday.
In an interview with Footwear News, the rapper recalls going into luxury shoe store Petit Peton, which used to be located in the SoHo neighborhood of New York, NY. Born in The Bronx and raised in Castle Hill Houses with a challenging upbringing, costly purchases were foreign to her.
While in the store, she felt persuaded by Fat Joe’s wife, Lorena Cartagenato, to swipe her card to buy $1,500 boots. Despite having her first hefty paycheck, she was apprehensive about swiping her card.
“We went to a store called Petit Peton in SoHo. They had purple ostrich thigh-high boots. She was like, ‘Rem, you’ve got to try them on, they’re crazy.’ I flipped the shoe, looked at the price and I’m like, ‘There has to be a decimal missing or something.’ I’d never seen a shoe cost that much in my life,” the rapper explained, according to Footwear News. “I’m from Castle Hill in the projects, I’m struggling to get [Reebok] 5411s — $1,500 boots are crazy to me. I instantly have buyer’s remorse. I’m having anxiety attacks. I’m like, ‘I’ve never spent this much money on anything in my life.’”
Ultimately, Remy Ma did leave the store with the shoe and a matching bag.
To this day, she says, many of her spending habits are geared toward purchasing items she couldn’t afford when she was younger.
“When we grew up, they were called 5411s because they cost $49.99 and after taxes it came up to $54.11. That was a lot. So I never could have them,” she told Footwear News. “A lot of times, my purchases are influenced by the purchases I couldn’t make as a kid. Throwbacks of certain sneakers, I’m like, ‘I’ve got to get them. For tenth grade me, I’ve got to do it.’”
Today, her tenth-grade self would probably be proud of the name, fortune, and lifestyle she built for herself.
According to Celebrity Net Worth, Remy Ma has an estimated net worth of $4 million.
