Magic Johnson already has a stake in several professional teams, but not in the NFL. However, that could be changing very soon.

Semafor reports Johnson is putting together a group of investors to help increase his likelihood of securing minority ownership in the Las Vegas Raiders.

Groundbreaking sports deal: If Johnson’s cards fall in line, this could break a record, according to sources involved.

For context, the average NFL franchise as of 2022 was valued at $4.14 billion, according to Sportico. Just this past August, Forbes confirmed Raiders owner Mark Davis received an offer for a minority stake in the team that placed its value at $6.5 billion.

It’s not a done deal, just yet: The deal has not been finalized, and there hasn’t been any official word from Johnson’s investment firm, Magic Johnson Enterprises, the Raiders, or the NFL.

When Johnson's Interest In Team Ownership Started

This isn’t the first time Johnson has shown interest as it pertains to owning an NFL team. As AfroTech previously told you, Johnson previously teamed up with Philadelphia 76ers co-owner Josh Harris in hopes of acquiring the NFL’s Denver Broncos.

Johnson, however, lost the bidding war when it was announced the Walton-Penner group was approved to purchase the Denver Broncos.

Current teams in Johnson’s portfolio: Johnson’s entry into sports ownership started back in 2012 when he purchased a 2.3 percent stake in the Los Angeles Dodgers. That team is now valued at $4.08 billion, according to statista. This is nearly double what the group of investors paid during the initial purchase, according to Yahoo! Sports.

Since then, Johnson has also added the following teams to his roster:

  • WNBA’s Los Angeles Sparks
  • Major League Soccer’s Los Angeles Football Club
  • Team Liquid

NBA Team Ownership On Johnson's Radar

It should come as no surprise that Johnson hopes to one day see an NBA team added to his list.

“We’ll see what happens. I will be owning an NBA team some time,” Johnson previously said, according to MarketWatch.
