When Shonda Rhimes gave us the critically acclaimed “Scandal,” Thursday nights were never the same. The brilliance of the show’s characters kept viewers captivated, all led by Olivia Pope, as portrayed by Kerry Washington.

Washington made the world feel like Olivia Pope could do just about anything. She was the proverbial cousin in most people’s heads and the “fixer” many people wish they had in real life. Although Washington’s role in “Scandal” was noteworthy, it wasn’t the first nor would it be the last time she’d make her mark on the culture.

Kerry Washington is a New York native with early roots in the acting industry. During her early teen years, she was a part of New York’s TADA! Youth Theater. Her work with the theater would prove beneficial as Washington went on to appear in hit television shows and films including “Ray” and “Little Fires Everywhere.”

The 46-year-old actress is also known for her work behind the camera as a producer and director for shows such as the hit HBO modern cult classic, “Insecure.”

Washington leverages her expertise and influence to advocate for equity and inclusion for Black people in and out of the industry. Following the social unrest of 2020, she spoke candidly with People Magazine about how much work still needs to be done.

“This is not a moment of revelation, but I’m watching the revelation around me for people, and I’m grateful that the world is showing up for black lives in a different way, but this is what has been the reality — this level of danger and anger and fear. Maybe trauma and lack of safety — this has been the reality of Black Americans since there were Black Americans,” Washington stated.

Her strong résumé and active schedule keep her busy. Through her work, she’s earned an estimated net worth of $50 million.

But when Washington is not making it happen on the screen in her latest show, “Unprisoned” on Hulu, she remains centered on her family. In fact, she considers her husband and children as proof of God’s love for her.

“We have three beautiful children,” Washington said to The Christian Post. “And I think, you know, when I look at my marriage, and I look at my kids, fundamentally, they are proof of God to me. Because I know that God loves me to have put those people in my life.”

Nnamdi Asomugha

Kerry Washington and Nnamdi Asomugha have been married since 2013. Asomugha is a former NFL cornerback who played for 10 seasons. During his career, he recorded 356 tackles and caught 15 interceptions.

He is also an actor appearing in films such as “The Banker” and “Harriett.”

The Nigerian-American runs the Asomugha Foundation with a mission to “empower disadvantaged youth and women by providing educational opportunities and mentorship.”

In 2015, he launched iAm21 Entertainment, a production company focusing on highlighting and impacting social change.

Kerry Washington and Nnamdi Asomugha's Three Children

Washington and Asomugha share three children, Isabelle Amarachi Asomugha, Caleb Kelechi Asomugha, and a teenage daughter he has from a previous relationship before his marriage to Washington.

Washington is on record about her intentional efforts to keep her family life private. However, she is open about some of her techniques and approaches to family life.

“Playing her [Olivia Pope] made me feel like I could be a mom,” Washington said to ELLE. “Because she knows there’s always another way—there’s always a way to fix it, there’s always a way to solve it, to win. And I feel like playing her made me feel like, All right, I can do it. I will figure out how to juggle it all.”
