Former NBA player Jason Kidd has invested in another soccer team.
As AFROTECH™ previously told you, the 10-time NBA All-Star and current head coach of the Dallas Mavericks has continued to pursue his passion for sports well beyond his playing days. As an investor, his portfolio includes two soccer teams based in his hometown of Oakland, CA: Roots SC (men’s) and Soul SC (women’s).
“In The Town when you talk about sports, we all had heroes. I’m excited to join the Roots and Soul family,” Kidd said at the time, according to Andscape. “I’ve been seeing videos of all the support they get. I’m just trying to help the family. I especially like that there are both male and female teams. Also, with the teams being in The Bay, I felt like it was a great fit.”
Everton Added To Portfolio
Now, Kidd has invested in another soccer team, this time joining Roundhouse Capital Holdings, which is part of The Friedkin Group, the ownership group of English Premier League club Everton, mentions ESPN. The team was reportedly valued at $744 million as of May 2023, according to Forbes.
“I’m honoured to be joining Everton’s ownership at such an important moment,” Kidd said in a news release. “With a new stadium on the horizon and a bright future ahead, it’s a great moment to come on board.”
Executive Chairman Marc Watt commented:
“On behalf of The Friedkin Group and the Everton Board of Directors, I am pleased to welcome Jason to our ownership group. As one of the NBA’s greatest players and now a successful coach, his knowledge and winning mentality will be an incredible resource for Everton. He is a respected leader and household name for many sports fans and will bring a deeper understanding of high performance as we collectively strive to build a brighter future for this storied club.”
Other Sports Figures Tied To English Soccer
As it relates to English soccer, Kidd joins sports legend Tom Brady, who is a part-owner of Birmingham City FC. Additionally, LeBron James has owned a minority stake in Liverpool FC since 2011, after purchasing a 2% stake for $6.5 million. Not to mention, James has additional equity in Fenway Sports Management, Liverpool’s owner.
