The hype around NFTs may have died down. However, Giannis Antetokounmpo has made history for one of his own.
Decrypt reports that the Milwaukee Bucks star’s single-edition NFT has sold for $187,000 (113.9 ETH) on Sorare NBA. The sale marks the platform’s highest-selling to date.
What’s more, the outlet notes that the sale is the largest-known sale of any Antetokounmpo NFT. Back in February 2021, there was a transaction of $95,000 on NBA Top Shot for an on-chain sale — making it tied for the 16th-largest on-chain Top Shot sale to date.
The outlet notes that the previous peak sale on the platform was Anthony Davis’ NFT which sold for over $62,000 in December 2022.
Launched in October 2022, Sorare NBA was created to allow fans to collect free cards, buy NFTs, and create and manage teams with NFTs representing NBA players, according to VentureBeat.
“This is our third sport, alongside football and MLB. And we’re really excited about this sport, as securing the NBA was one of the top goals of the company from the day that I joined a year ago,” Michael Meltzer, head of business development at Sorare told GamesBeat. “Just given the star power of NBA players, it fits within the global nature of our product and international community that we have in over 185 countries.”
“We’ve had a ton of respect for the NBA players who have been at the forefront of innovation and technology for a number of years,” he continued. “We look at NFTs as a underlying technology, not a market. And so we think there are lots of different unique use cases and applications. Our fantasy sports entertainment product leverages blockchain to bring ownership to the game. And we think that’s completely different than anything that’s been on the market, particularly with the NBA, whether in Web three or elsewhere.”
