GoFundMe Will Remove Anti-Vax Campaigns Spreading Misinformation

Anti-vax campaigns have entered the conversation around misinformation on the internet, with false theories about the harms that come with vaccinations spreading on platforms like Facebook and Youtube. The role fundraising sites play in this has mostly gone unnoticed, until now. Recently, GoFundMe shared it will remove anti-vax campaigns on its website, as reported by The Daily Beast. A spokesman for GoFundMe told the outlet, “Campaigns raising money to promote misinformation about vaccines violate GoFundMe’s terms of service and will be removed from the platform.” According to The Daily Beast, fundraisers by anti-vax groups have raised at least $170,000 in the last four years on GoFundMe. That’s a significant amount of money. Removing their ability to use GoFundMe may not completely defund anti-vax groups, but it’ll definitely make things harder for them moving forward. Bolo is designed for elementary school students and uses Google’s speech recognition and text-to-speech technology. In addition, Google shared that Bolo comes with a built-in reading buddy for kids called “Diya.” “Diya encourages, aids, explains, and corrects the child as they read aloud — a nytime, anywhere, ” Google said. Report: Hijacked Dormant Twitter Accounts Are Spreading Islamic State Propaganda

Hackers have hijacked dormant Twitter accounts in an attempt to spread Islamic State propaganda, according to reporting from TechCrunch. The hijacks took place ranging from the last few days to the last few months. Hackers were able to get into the accounts using a decade-old flaw in Twitter’s system that did not previously require email or phone number verifications. In November, Twitter removed 9 million bot and spam accounts to prevent those types of accounts from automatically making news ones. “We made progress preventing spammy or suspicious new account creation by requiring new accounts to confirm either an email address or phone number when they sign up to Twitter, and we improved the detection and removal of previously banned accounts who attempt to evade suspension by creating new accounts,” Twitter said in a quarterly filing after removing the accounts. The latest string of hijackers were able to take over by finding older dormant accounts using expired email addresses....

Sixty-six percent of Americans have heard of social media bots and only 47 percent are very or somewhat confident they can recognize these accounts on social media. The Pew Research Center—a nonpartisan fact tank that informs the public about attitudes and trends—surveyed over 4500 adults finding that 66 percent believe social media bots have a mostly negative effect on how well-informed Americans are about current events. Eighty-percent of Americans think bots are mostly used for bad purposes. According to the study, younger Americans are more knowledgeable about social media bots and men are 23 percent more likely than women to have heard about bots. Across demographic groups, Americans who have heard about bots believe they are mostly used for malicious purposes. In comparison, a similar survey conducted after the 2016 U.S....

At a time when public trust in government is already on shaky ground, the latest actions by the IRS and ICE are only deepening the divide. Word is spreading fast: the IRS is reportedly finalizing a deal that would give Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) access to confidential taxpayer data to locate and deport undocumented immigrants. For many, this isn’t just another policy shift — it’s a direct betrayal of a system that asked for participation and is now threatening punishment in return.
