Trump also shares that he doesn’t intend to cut the federal funding budget for HBCUs that is already in place. “I got them more money than they ever dreamt possible, and they’re in great shape now,” Trump said referring to a 2019 bill that started allocating over $250 million yearly to HBCUs starting in 2021, according to the outlet. “They have long-term financing. Nobody did that but Donald Trump.” Howard University Responds Howard University is requesting that its budget for the 2026 year...

As AFROTECH™ previously told you, Harvard received two letters from federal agencies instructing it to discontinue its diversity, equity, and inclusion (DEI) commitments. The letters stated that failure to comply could result in the loss of about $9 billion in federal funding. According to Reuters, some of the conditions included reducing the influence of faculty, staff, and students who are “more committed to activism than scholarship.” Additionally, the letters requested an external panel to audit these groups for alignment with “viewpoint diversity,” arguing that the university has “failed to live up to both the intellectual and civil rights conditions that justify federal investment.” The letters also flagged concerns about unchallenged antisemitism. While Harvard University did agree to address concerns about antisemitism on campus, it also stated, “These ends...

Op-Ed: The Department Of Education Will Bankrupt Student Loan Borrowers

Editorial Note: Opinions and thoughts are the author’s own and not those of AFROTECH™. This week, former wrestling promoter and current Education Secretary Linda McMahon published an Op-Ed in the Wall Street Journal announcing the Trump administration’s plans to begin collecting on defaulted student loans. However, as we’re on the brink of experiencing a recession thanks to President Donald Trump’s trade war, this act runs the risk of contributing to an economic slowdown, according to ABC News. Beginning on May 5, around 5 million borrowers who have defaulted on their student loans will be sent to collections. When they are sent to collections, the federal government will seize federal tax refunds, even garnish wages and other forms of income to pay off the debt. Many borrowers cannot afford a student loan payment, which is why they defaulted in the first place. Federal loans also have high interest rates, which this current administration has shown no interest in lowering to...

Antoine Walker Earned Over $100M In The NBA But Filed For Bankruptcy — Now He's Teaching Athletes To Avoid Similar Pitfalls

Antoine Walker, a 2006 NBA champion, wants athletes to learn from his financial mishaps. At 19 years old, he was drafted into the NBA in 1996 by the Boston Celtics and remained in the league for 13 years. Yahoo Finance reports his career earnings amounted to $108 million, including a six-year contract worth $71 million that he signed at age 21. While making all this money early on is an accomplishment, it also came with harsh learning lessons for Walker. “The money came so fast without the education,” he told host Ross Mac on the “Financial Freestyle” podcast. Walker’s first paycheck was tied to a $1.6 million payday, but after taxes, his actual earnings ended up being $800,000, he says. He came from “very humble beginnings” and had little understanding of financial literacy, particularly about taxes. This lack of knowledge, combined with excessive spending and real estate investments that went south during the Great Recession, contributed to his filing for Chapter 7 bankruptcy in...

According to a statement on its website announcing the closure, Chan and late educator Meredith Liu established the school, which has campuses in East Palo Alto and East Bay, CA , “on the guiding principle that raising a child is a team effort” and the decision to close came “after much deliberation.” “Too often, our country’s systems of care are siloed and don’t adequately address a child’s varied needs,” the statement read. “The Primary School model breaks down those silos by bringing together the adults in a child’s life — including parents, educators, and health providers — starting from an early age.” The statement continued, “…This was a very difficult decision, and we are committed to ensuring a thoughtful and supportive transition for...

Harvard University Sues Trump Administration Over $2.2B Federal Funding Freeze

Harvard University is suing the Trump administration for threatening to withhold federal funding after the university refused to comply with demands the government outlined in a letter dated April 11, 2025. On Monday, April 21, Harvard University President Alan Garber announced the lawsuit filed in U.S. District Court in Boston, MA, in a letter published on the university’s website. In the letter, he said the administration’s demands violate the First Amendment, disregard federal law, and threaten life-saving medical research. “Moments ago, we filed a lawsuit to halt the funding freeze because it is unlawful and beyond the government’s authority,” Garber wrote. “…Before taking punitive action, the law requires that the federal government engage with us about the ways we are fighting and will continue to fight antisemitism.
